When Constance heard that, she got so dizzy that she toppled backward.

“Ma’am!” Nora heard a commotion of panicked voices on the other end, and then the line went dead.

Julian was rushed straight into the ER. Nora tried to follow him in, but a doctor stopped her. “Family members need to wait out here.”

Only a few minutes later, a nurse came out and handed her a form to sign, stating that Julian was in critical condition.

Nora read it. It listed heart damage, brain damage, and other acute çonditions, and it said the medical team was doing everything they could to save him. She went weak at the knees, and her hand shook as she hel the pen.

In his condition, the only thing that could hold the toxin at bay long enough to get him an antidote was Clearheart. And only Cordelia had Clearheart.

Nora anxiously asked the nurse, “Is Cordelia Blithe here yet?” There wasn’t a hospital in the city where people didn’t know Cordelia’s name.

“Dr. Blithe is performing emergency heart surgery at the main hospital right now,” the nurse replied. “It’ll take at least eight hours. She won’t be able to come here anytime soon.”

Olivia’s earliest flight wasn’t until tomorrow morning, and Cordelia would be in surgery for at least eight hours. Can Julian really hold on for eight more hours?

Nora couldn’t bear to imagine what would happen if he didn’t. She signed the form with a trembling hand.

“Nora!” Gideon came hurrying over. “How’s Mr. Weston doing?”

Nora looked up at the red light above the ER doors. “They’re still working on him.”

Gideon tried to reassure her. “Mr. Weston is going to be fine. As soon as my mentor finishes her surgery, she’ll come straight here.

“I’m about to go in and help treat him. Is there anything else I can do for you?”

Nora slowly turned to look at him. “Did you bring Clearheart?”

Gideon blinked, then shook his head. “No. My mentor keeps the Clearheart. She’s the only one who can get to it.”

“Then take me into the ER,” Nora said. “I’ll save Julian myself.”

Gideon frowned and refused. “You don’t have a medical license. You can’t go in there.”

Nora looked up at him coldly. “Then everything you’re saying is useless. What exactly can you do to help

me?

“Look at what Cordelia’s done to me. She’s been setting me up one step at a time. First, she invited me to her symposium and built me up as some kind of prodigy healer. Then, she got someone to make Tanya lose

she stuck me in a sealed room with aphrodisiac cologne I couldn’t escape. If I hadn’t used my needles to che-stick hod it off, I could’ve lost control right there in the interrogation room and slept with some other man!

“Cordelia knew that could happen. She knew I’d end up sleeping with Julian, and that he’d have an attack because of me, since he’s supposed to stay celibate! And now, they’re the only ones with the antidote, and they’re all conveniently too busy.

“She wants to see me ruined. She wants Grandma Weston to hate me for hurting Julian. She wants us divorced, doesn’t she?

“And now you show up pretending you want to help? If you really want to help, then bring me the Clearheart!”

The traps had started the moment Cordelia invited her to the symposium. Every time one failed, the next one was already waiting. And now, with Julian fighting for his life and every one of them suddenly unavailable, the final trap had sprung. Nora would have no choice but to swallow her pride and beg Cordelia for help.

Gideon frowned hard at the accusation and shot back angrily, “My mentor isn’t like that. You’re the one with the twisted mind. You’ve got her all wrong.”

Nora scoffed, but she didn’t have the energy to argue with him right now. “If anything happens to Julian, I’ll make sure Cordelia never knows a moment’s peace for the rest of her life!”

She turned away, took out her phone, and called Rosalind, who picked up right away.

Rosalind sounded as warm and gentle as ever. “Nora, sweetheart, why haven’t you come by yet? I made you some chicken soup, and I’m keeping it warm for you…”

The moment Nora heard that voice, everything she’d been holding in snapped. All of a sudden, she felt hurt and alone, and all the fear she’d been fighting back came pouring out like a river bursting through a levee.

“Grandma…” She choked up on the very first word.

Gideon looked up and watched her walk slowly away. From behind, she looked like the whole world had abandoned her, and he felt a pang despite himself. He even caught himself wondering. Could she be right about all of it?

Rosalind knew how strong Nora always tried to be. She could hardly remember the last time she’d heard her sob like this, and it broke her heart.

“Don’t cry, Nora. Tell Grandma what’s wrong. Don’t be scared. I’m right here.”

Nora couldn’t stop picturing Julian in the middle of that attack, and it terrified her. “Grandma, Julian’s dying. He had an attack. There’s a new toxin in his system, and I don’t know how to treat it.

“He needs Clear-” She stopped herself.

But only Cordelia had Clearheart, and making it required a rare herb called azurewort. The only azurewort Nora had, she’d already given to Rosalind, who needed it to survive.

If Rosalind found out, she’d hand the azurewort over without a second thought. That was exactly why Nora
