Chapter 251 A Dead End

“Nora, I’m not lying to you,” Victor said. “There’s no azurewort left, and no seedlings either. The one I gave you last time was the last one.”
Nora stared at him, furious. “Not even a seedling? Then what’s my grandmother supposed to do next year?”
Victor said nothing.
One look at him, and Nora knew exactly what he was thinking. She gritted her teeth. “So you were planning to keep lying to me?”
She was so angry that she was breathing hard. “Victor Sinclair! That’s a human life! That’s my grandmother the only real family I’ve got! How could you lie to me?”
In my previous life, did Grandma really die because there wasn’t any azurewort? Or did somebody kill her? Nora wondered.
Victor saw how worked up she was and tried to calm her down. “We’ll figure something out when the time comes. Besides, I’m your family too. Your grandmother’s old. Whether she dies sooner or later, what difference does it make?”
Nora was so furious that she slapped him across the face. “Then you can drop dead right now!”
The slap wasn’t especially loud. But a daughter slapping her own father across the face hit the room like a thunderclap.
Mandy watched gleefully, waiting for Victor to throw Nora out.
Victor glared at Nora and raised his hand to hit her back.
Nora lifted her chin and glared right back at him. “Go ahead and hit me, and I’ll tell everyone about Kend-”
Victor panicked and cut her off. “I know who has azurewort!”
Yvette eyed them suspiciously, and Mandy frowned too.
Nora asked right away, “Who? Cordelia Blithe?”
Victor shook his head. “Who’s Cordelia Blithe? I’ve never heard of her.”
Everyone called Cordelia Dr. Blithe, and Victor had never paid any attention to the medical world, so her real name meant nothing to him.
Under Nora’s sharp stare, Victor quickly added, “It’s not her. It’s a Dr. Vance.”
A Dr. Vance wasn’t much to go on. Nora asked him coldly, “Which hospital? What’s his full name?”
Victor didn’t remember that much. “Just a Dr. Vance. He wasn’t from around here. I met him right around the time your mother had you, and I sold him the azurewort. He said he wanted to study it.
“We lost touch after that. I have no idea where he is now.”

He looked at her earnestly. “It’s true. I swear I’m not lying to you.

+know is that Dr. Vance worked at Cedar Falls Women’s and Children’s Hospital. That’s where you were bon. I happened to meet him there. He was interested in azurewort, so I sold it to him.”
Nora studied him closely. He didn’t seem to have the nerve to lie to her right now. She gave a cold snori, then turned and walked out.
Victor watched her go and let out a huge sigh of relief.
Yvette walked up to him, suspicious. “Victor Sinclair, you haven’t been doing anything behind my back, have you?” She’d suddenly remembered what Blake had told her about Victor taking his secretary, Kendra, to the OB.
Victor puffed out his chest, the picture of righteous indignation. “After everything we’ve been through, you really have to ask? I’d never do that to you. If you don’t believe me, fine.
“My face is killing me. I’m going to go put some ice on it.”
Yvette saw him trying to slip away and started after him to have it out.
But Mandy grabbed her arm, her eyes shining with excitement. “Mom! Julian’s about to die!
“This time, he’s really about to die! Now Ace has a shot at being the richest man in the city.
“Nora’s luck is about to run out!”
Yvette wasn’t nearly as thrilled as Mandy expected. “You’d better be right. Otherwise…” She sighed. All of a sudden, she didn’t feel like confronting Victor anymore.

Nora got into her car and called Ryder. “Ryder, where are you? Are you free?”
“For you, Nora?” Ryder laughed. “Even if I had my pants halfway off, I’d still-”
Nora cut him off. “I’m serious.”
Ryder heard how tired and serious she sounded, and he dropped the act right away. “I’m free. If you need something, just say so. You never have to ask if I’m free.” Whenever Nora needed him, he’d always make time.
“I need you to look into a Dr. Vance who worked at Cedar Falls Women’s and Children’s Hospital 21 years ago,” Nora said. “Find out his full name and where he lives now. As fast as you can.”
“Got it,” Ryder said.
Nora pressed her lips together. “I also need a hospital I can trust, with the most advanced equipment you can find, especially for lab work. And some experts in the field.
“Get it done fast.”
She sounded grim. She couldn’t use Rosalind’s azurewort to save Julian, but she couldn’t just stand by and watch him die either. And she wasn’t going to go begging Cordelia, not unless there was truly no other

Ryder didn’t ask any questions. He just said okay, hung up, and immediately started making calls.
