Chapter 252 A Suspicious Coincidence

“Huh?” Ryder said, laying it on thick. “They did have a son! How’d you know that? You’re amazing, Nora. You know how much I love it when you’re brilliant.”

Nora had no time for his banter. “Is their son’s name Gideon Vance?”

Ryder was genuinely impressed. She’d practically guessed it. “Wow, you’re good. Not quite right, but close. Arthur Vance’s son was named Gid. Just Gid, not Gideon.”

Nora frowned again. “So it’s not Gideon?”

They had the same last name. Both parents were dead, and the father had been killed by a patient’s family. That sounded exactly like Gideon’s parents. And the names were nearly identical. It was way too much of a coincidence.

“I checked. His name’s definitely not Gideon,” Ryder said. “After Gid’s parents died, his aunt took him in, but only for the settlement money. After that, he got passed around like a hot potato.

“Eventually, Gid ended up in foster care, and the trail goes cold after that. I went back three generations, and he’s got no blood relatives left. Even his aunt by marriage has no idea where he is.”

When Ryder found out Arthur Vance had died, he’d gone ahead and dug into three generations of the family. He’d have been a pretty useless sidekick if he couldn’t answer her questions.

Nora pieced it together. Arthur had bought the azurewort, and then he’d died. After that, Cordelia had taken in Gideon, and suddenly, she had azurewort too. On top of that, Cordelia had bred her mutant orchid right around 20 years ago. It was all way too convenient.

She sounded much more serious now. “Dig deeper into Arthur Vance. And look into Gideon too. I want to know whether they’re connected.”

“You got it,” Ryder said breezily. “But this won’t be quick. It’ll take at least two or three days.”

“That’s fine.” Arthur and Gideon could wait.

“I found the hospital and the experts you wanted,” Ryder said. “I’ll send you the address and contact info.”

“Good.” Now that she was finally making progress, Nora breathed a sigh of relief. “Thanks, Ryder.”

Ryder huffed, sounding put out. “Come on, Nora, don’t be so formal with me. I’m your biggest fan. All I want is for you to spoil me and love me. Forget a little favor. If you wanted my life, I’d hand it over on a silver platter.”

For once, Nora didn’t cut him off. She let him finish, said she had to go, and hung up.

Soon, Ryder texted her the address and the contact info for the person in charge. Nora frowned when she saw the address. Then, she went quiet.

Ryder sent another text. “Sorry, it was the best I could do. The Blithes are a medical dynasty. Half the hospital chains in the country belong to them, and every big-name hospital in the city with top-of-the-line equipment is theirs too.”

And it wasn’t just the hospitals. A lot of the doctors had been trained by the Blithes, and the ones who hadn’t still had some connection or other to them. The Blithes had been practicing medicine for over a century.

hey sat at the very top of the medical world.

Nora texted back, “That works.”

Ryder replied, “Nora, if it really comes down to it, would you go to Dr. Blithe and beg?”

Nora didn’t answer. She didn’t know herself. Until it came down to the wire, she refused to doubt herself and put Julian’s life in someone else’s hands. In the end, the only person she could count on was herself.

Wren rushed to the hospital just as Constance came hurrying up to the ER doors, leaning on Bess for

support.

Since she’d met Constance before, Wren nodded politely. “Grandma Weston.”

Constance gave her a puzzled look. Wren looked familiar, but she couldn’t place her.

Bess explained, “Ma’am, this is Wren Calloway, Damon Winter’s wife.”

Constance was worried sick about Julian, but she still greeted Wren politely. “Oh, you’re the Winters’ daughter-in-law. What brings you here?”

Fiona had just hurried in too. When she heard that, she rushed up to Constance. “Grandma Weston, Ms. Calloway isn’t Damon’s wife anymore. They’re divorced.”
