Chapter 253 A Life Used as Leverage

And now, Joss had decided to sign with the Pierce Group instead. At this point, all Constance wanted was for Julian to make it out of the ER alive.

Wren had only just arrived herself, so she didn’t know anything yet.

So Fiona answered instead. “I just asked the hospital director. They’re still working on Julian, and it’s critical There isn’t a doctor in the whole city who can save him.”

Constance staggered and nearly fell.

Fiona beat Wren to it and caught her by the arm. “Right now, only Dr. Blithe and Olivia can save him.

“But Dr. Blithe is in the middle of heart surgery, and she’ll be at it for at least another seven hours. And Olivia can’t fly back until tomorrow morning.

“And…” Fiona paused and shot Wren a smug, sidelong look before going on. “Julian’s condition is critical. They need to stabilize him within six hours, or not even a miracle will save him. Best case, he ends up with severe brain damage in a vegetative state. Worst case, he dies.”

The word “dies” made Constance’s head spin. “Is there really no way Cordelia can finish her surgery sooner?”

Fiona put on a troubled look. “Grandma Weston, it’s heart surgery. Dr. Blithe can’t just stop in the middle to come save Julian. That’s against the law. That patient’s life matters too.”

Constance knew that. But when it came down to it, everyone was selfish, and she’d have given anything to save Julian.

Then, Fiona added, “Actually, it doesn’t have to be Dr. Blithe or Olivia. I hear Nora’s quite the healer. Some people even call her a prodigy. Why don’t you let her give it a try, Grandma Weston?”

Constance had been sinking into despair, but when she heard that, something clicked. Maybe Cordelia’s heart surgery wasn’t the real reason she couldn’t come. Maybe what she really wanted was for Nora to come begging.

Wren could see the trap Fiona was setting for Nora, and she hurried to tell Constance, “Grandma Weston, Nora has never called herself a prodigy. She-”

Fiona cut her off. “Isn’t Nora supposed to be so amazing? She’s questioned Dr. Blithe and Olivia more than once. So now that she’s the reason Julian had an attack, why is she nowhere to be found?”

Then, she turned to Constance. “Grandma Weston, the doctors said Julian’s attack was triggered by an aphrodisiac. It got him so aroused that his heart started racing and set off the toxin. That’s why he ended up in the ER so suddenly.”

Wren had always been a pushover, especially around Fiona. Fiona always made her feel small, and she rarely dared to speak up. But this time, she looked up sharply and pushed back. “Stop making things up. Nora isn’t like that.”

Fiona looked at her. “I never said Nora drugged Julian. Why are you so quick to get defensive? Don’t tell me you were in on it too.”

“Ohhh,” she drawled. “I heard you work at a spa now. Places like that probably light aphrodisiac candles to get customers in the mood and make a little money on the side. Nora owns the place, so getting her hands

something like that wouldn’t be hard at all.”

Wren turned red with anger. “Just because your mind’s in the gutter doesn’t mean everyone else is like that! Nora would never do something like that, and every cent I make is honest money!”

“Who knows?” Fiona said. “Either way, Julian almost slept with Nora, and then the toxin flared up. That part’s a fact.”

“You-” Wren started.

Constance cut them off irritably. “That’s enough bickering.”

Wren sheepishly closed her mouth, then looked at Constance with quiet determination. “Grandma Weston, please trust Nora. She isn’t that kind of person.”

Constance nodded gravely. “I know. There must be some other reason the toxin flared up. Nora had nothing to do with it.”

She’d seen with her own eyes how crazy Julian was about Nora. If Nora really wanted to sleep with him, she wouldn’t need to stoop to dirty tricks like that.

Wren breathed a sigh of relief.

Fiona hadn’t expected Constance to trust Nora that much. That would make it a lot harder to drive a wedge between them, help Olivia, and get under Wren’s skin while she was at it.

She stepped up and took Constance’s arm. “Grandma Weston, you can see it for yourself in his medical records. Julian’s attack really was caused by an aphrodisiac. And it’s been ages, but Nora still isn’t here.”

Fiona looked up as the hospital director approached. “Doctor, could you tell Grandma Weston how Julian’s doing?”

Phil, the hospital director, was taking a personal interest in this case. After all, Julian was the richest man in the city. As soon as he’d heard Constance was here, he’d rushed over to answer her questions.

“Mrs. Weston.” He handed her a stack of medical records. “These are Mr. Weston’s test results. Please, take a look.”

Constance took them and flipped through the pages while Phil explained all the medical jargon in plain

terms.
