“Adoctor from the Caduceus Order?” Constance could hardly believe it. She asked Phil again, “Are you sure that doctor was from the Caduceus Order?”
Wren had never heard of the Caduceus Order. She just frowned. “Doctor, couldn’t you be mistaken? The person who just went in there has to be Nora.” The more she said it, the surer she felt. “I’m not wrong. That was Nora. I’d know her anywhere.”
“There’s no mistake,” Phil said. “The Caduceus Order’s steward called me personally. Otherwise, I’d neverled just anyone into the ER.”
Fiona sneered at Wren. “You’ve never even heard of the Caduceus Order, have you?”
Wren pressed her lips together. She hadn’t, and she couldn’t pretend otherwise.
Fiona could tell from her face, and she scoffed. “Not surprising. Not everyone knows about the Caduceus Order.
“It’s an ancient order of healers that’s been passed down for centuries, from one generation of master physicians to the next. Hardly any outsiders know it exists, and it goes back at least 300 years.
“These days, everyone goes to modern hospitals, and hardly anyone pays attention to the old healing traditions. So of course you wouldn’t know that Dr. Blithe is the Order’s deputy head. Right now, she’s the one who really runs it.
“And Olivia is going to be the next head of the Order.”
Wren was stunned. She’d had no idea the Caduceus Order was such a big deal.
Fiona gave her a look of pure contempt. “You don’t even know what the Caduceus Order is, and you think that doctor was Nora?
“Dr. Blithe called her a prodigy once to be polite. Don’t tell me you actually believe it?”
Wren didn’t care if people laughed at her. But she hated the way Fiona was mocking Nora and looking down
on her.
She lifted her head and looked Fiona right in the eye. “I’m not wrong. The person who just went in there
was Nora.
“Maybe I don’t know anything about the Caduceus Order, but Nora’s my cousin. I know her better than anyone. I’d never mistake someone else for her.”
Fiona snorted. “Then show the director a picture of her. That’ll settle it.”
Wren quickly pulled out her phone, found a picture of Nora, and held it out to Phil. “Take a look. Was it
her?”
Phil looked at the photo of a stunningly beautiful Nora and grimaced. “I never saw her face. When I met her, she was already in all that gear. There wasn’t any time.
“Mr. Weston has three hours at most. If we wait any longer, even if Dr. Blithe gets here and manages to save

That’s why that doctor was in such a hurry. It’s a race against death in there.”

Wren put her phone away and looked up at Constance. “Grandma Weston, I’m certain that was Nora.”
Fiona laughed scornfully. “Didn’t you hear what the director said? Dr. Blithe couldn’t get away, and she was worried something might happen to Julian, so she called in a doctor from the Caduceus Order to save him.
“Nora’s just a daughter from a nobody family like the Sinclairs. Forget saving anyone herself/She couldn’y even get a doctor from the Caduceus Order to take her call. She probably couldn’t get their janitor to show up.”
Wren was seething, but she didn’t have a comeback. Still, she refused to back down. “I know what I saw. That was Nora. Once they’re done in there, we’ll find out.”
Fiona turned to Constance. “Grandma Weston, Dr. Blithe sent for that doctor. There’s no way it’s Nora.
“Wren’s only saying it’s Nora so you’ll think she’s here. She’s buying Nora time to skip the country. You should have people search the whole city for her right now.”
Constance gave them both a cool glance. “Once they’re done, we’ll know who it was, and who called in the Caduceus Order.”

Nora finished scrubbing in and entered the ER.
She saw Julian lying on the table, pale as a ghost, his lips completely drained of color. He looked like he could stop breathing at any moment.
It felt like someone had reached into her chest and squeezed. The ache spread from there until she could feel it everywhere.
Gideon looked up when the masked doctor came in, wondering if it might be his mentor. He took a second look. There was something familiar about this person. Is that… Nora?
He turned to the nurse. “Who’s that?”
The nurse answered, “The director just called. He said it’s a doctor from the Caduceus Order, here to treat the patient, and we’re supposed to follow the doctor’s orders.”
Gideon nodded and felt a wave of relief. He must have been mistaken. If the doctor was from the Caduceus Order, then his mentor had to be behind it.
Nora took a deep breath and pushed down the ache in her chest. “Give me Julian Weston’s test results.”
