Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 257

Chapter 257 The Thirteen Gates

Finished

When Gidcon heard this doctor call his mentor just plain Cordelia, Nora came to mind again. But the voice was so hoarse that he couldn’t even tell if it was a man or a woman. Besides, this was his mentor’s hospital. There was no way Nora could get into the ER here.

Gideon objected first. “Julian’s condition is too unstable for ordinary needle techniques. The Fivefold Method Olivia uses might have a chance, but she’s volunteering up in the mountains, and it’ll be a while before she gets back.”

Nora looked up at him coolly. “Who told you the Fivefold Method is the only thing that works? There’s another technique that can save Julian’s life right now and keep him going until we have an antidote.”

“What technique?” Gideon didn’t believe it. As far as he knew, the Fivefold Method that Olivia had learned was the most powerful technique there was.

The answer was the Thirteen Gates, but Nora didn’t say it out loud. Rosalind had told her never to reveal it, and she intended to keep that promise.

“Just do as I say,” Nora said calmly. “Whatever happens, I’ll take full responsibility.”

Gideon wasn’t about to let some stranger do whatever they wanted with his patient.

The nurse who’d been in contact with the director spoke up. “Dr. Blithe brought in this doctor from the Caduceus Order. We’re supposed to do whatever the doctor says.”

So his mentor had arranged it. That put Gideon’s mind at ease. “Then we’ll do as the doctor says.”

Nora glanced up at them. “Cordelia Blithe didn’t send me. I have nothing to do with her.”

By then, the nurse assisting her had already set a full tray of sterilized gold needles beside her. Nora didn’t say another word. She picked up a needle, found the exact point on Julian’s body, and slid it in.

She worked with total precision, hitting every point dead-on. Sometimes she’d only glance at a spot before flicking a needle into it from several inches away.

Even for drawing blood or giving shots, a technique like that was rare. But this was needling on precise pressure points. Nobody in the room had ever seen anyone flick needles in from a distance like that, let alone with that kind of accuracy.

Gideon, meanwhile, was studying her technique. She was incredibly fast, and the points she chose were bizarre. To him, every one of them looked one slip away from killing Julian.

It made his blood run cold, and he couldn’t help demanding, “What technique is this? It’s not in any of the texts my mentor taught me.”

Nora didn’t answer. She kept all her focus on the needles, her forehead beaded with sweat.

Gideon watched her press a fingertip to the spot between Julian’s eyebrows and raise a gold needle. He lunged for her hand in horror. “That’s a lethal point! You can’t put a needle there!”

But it was too late. The needle was already in. In an instant, the heart monitor started blaring an alarm.

“Oh no! He’s flatlining! The patient’s in cardiac arrest!” someone shouted.

Quick! Get the defibrillator!” Gideon glanced at the monitor and went white as a sheet.

Nora didn’t even flinch. Calm and steady, she picked up another gold needle, ready to place the final one.

Gideon grabbed her wrist and glared at her. “You’ve already put him into cardiac arrest, and now you’re going for his temple? Are you trying to kill him?”

“Get out of my way!” Nora knocked his hand away. Every second counted, and she didn’t have time to explain.

“I won’t let you-” Gideon tried to stop her again, but Nora didn’t even look up. She slapped a palm against his shoulder. Her hand looked small and delicate, but the blow hit him like a battering ram, and he stumbled back three steps.

In one swift motion, she drove the last gold needle into Julian’s temple.

The heart monitor let out a long, piercing tone, even shriller than before. To everyone on the medical team, it sounded like a death knell.

One by one, they squeezed their eyes shut and gave up. This time, Julian was a goner for sure.

But a second later, while they were all bracing for the worst, the long tone cut off. In its place came a steady, regular beeping.

The whole room fell silent. Everyone worked up the nerve to open their eyes and look at the monitor.

“He’s alive! The patient’s alive!” someone cried. The flat line on the monitor had turned back into steady peaks and valleys, even more stable than before.
