Chapter 258 A Reckless Bet

Geon kucw a technique like that couldn’t be learned just by watching it once, especially with those flicked needles. “The whole point of medicine is to save lives. Every life counts. A technique this good should be shared so it can save more people. Isn’t it a little selfish to keep it to yourself?”

Nora found that hilarious. She tilted her head and looked at him. “Since you’re so selfless, have you taught everyone your techniques and everything you’ve ever learned?”

“Of course!” Gideon answered without hesitation.

Nora scoffed. “So did your mentor teach you that little speech too?”

Gideon nodded. “My mentor has devoted her whole life to medicine. I’ve been hearing those principles since I was a kid.”

Nora smiled. “Then isn’t Olivia’s Fivefold Method a Blithe family secret? Why is she the only one who can do the treatment she’s giving Julian? Why can’t you? And why hasn’t it been shared with the whole world?

“And why does your mentor divide her students into her inner circle and everyone else?”

Nora’s rapid-fire questions left Gideon speechless. It wasn’t just the Fivefold Method either. There were several other techniques that only he and Olivia had been taught, and some that only Olivia knew.

After thinking it over, Gideon still defended Cordelia. “My mentor has a lot on her plate. She can’t be everywhere at once. Julian’s case is special, and I’m not as gifted as Olivia. It’s only natural that she’d favor her own family.”

Nora let out a short laugh at how hard he was defending Cordelia, but she didn’t have time to argue.

She picked up the test results again and turned to a nurse. “Draw more blood and rerun these tests. One or two of these numbers are wrong.”

Working on Julian with the gold needles had given her a much better sense of his condition and the toxin. He wasn’t in as much danger now. She just needed to buy time until Rosalind finished making the medicine.

She’d have to stay here and check on Julian every hour, using the needles to draw out the toxin. Otherwise, he wouldn’t last until the medicine was ready. And once the new test results came back, she’d know exactly what had triggered this attack.

Outside the ER, time crept by. The sun went down, and soon it was dark. Every so often, a nurse came out and went back in, always looking grim. It didn’t look good.

As long as nobody brought out another critical condition notice, Constance didn’t dare ask. She was afraid of what she’d hear.

She kept trying Nora’s phone, but all she got was a cold automated message saying the phone was switched off.

After yet another failed call, Fiona held out a food container to her. “Grandma Weston, please eat something.”

Constance shook her head. “I’m not hungry. You have it.”

With Julian fighting for his life and Nora missing, she had no appetite at all.

Fiona coaxed her. “Just eat a little, Grandma Weston. You rushed over here without a moment’s rest, and now you won’t eat anything.

“The last thing we need is for you to collapse while Julian’s pulling through. And besides, if he really…”

She paused before going on. “If Julian really doesn’t make it this time, you’ll need to be strong more than ever. The whole Weston Group and the entire family will be counting on you.”

Wren didn’t know Constance well enough to chime in, so she just kept her eyes fixed on the ER doors.

Constance really had no appetite, but Fiona had talked her into it. “You’re right. I’ll eat a little.”

Fiona opened the insulated container and eagerly handed her a spoon. “It’s chicken soup with root vegetables. Olivia had it made especially for you. Eat as much as you can. It’ll be good for you.”

Constance took the spoon and sighed. “Olivia’s such a good girl, thinking of me at a time like this.”

Fiona smiled. “Olivia practically grew up at your side. We all used to say she and Julian were childhood sweethearts who’d get married someday. Who knew…” She paused, then sighed with regret. “Who knew someone else would swoop in and steal him away?”

That rubbed Wren the wrong way on Nora’s behalf. She looked up at Fiona. “So anyone who grows up together has to get married? You’ve had plenty of childhood friends since kindergarten. Are you going to marry all of them?”

Fiona glared at her. “I wasn’t talking about you. Why are you taking it so personally?”

“I just can’t stand hearing that kind of talk,” Wren said. “You’re practically cheering her on to be the other

woman.”

Fiona shot to her feet, furious, and glared right at her. “What did I say that was wrong? Olivia’s loved Julian since she was a little girl. Marrying him has been her dream her whole life. She’d die for him.

“Fine, Nora stole Julian. But couldn’t she at least love him for real and treat him right? Instead, she drugged him and landed him in the ER, and now she’s run off without a trace. Nobody can even get her on the phone.

“She took the man someone else loves more than anything and trampled all over him. How is that not despicable?”
