Fiona jumped at the unfamiliar voice. She looked up and saw the masked doctor walking out of the ER. “WH-who are you? What gives you the right to take a bet for Wren?”
Constance hastily set the soup aside and hurried over to Nora. “Doctor, how’s my grandson? Did… did you save him?”
Nora nodded. “His life isn’t in danger for now.”
Constance had been on pins and needles for hours. Now, she finally let herself breathe, and she burst into tears of joy. “Thank goodness. Oh, thank goodness.”
Wren rushed over and threw her arms around Nora. “Nora! You were in there after all! I knew I wasn’t seeing things!”
Nora gave her an apologetic look. “Sorry. I’ve been swamped. I hate that you had to put up with all this.”
She hadn’t expected Wren to be here. When she’d arrived, all she’d been thinking about was getting into the ER to save Julian, so she hadn’t even noticed her. She definitely hadn’t expected Fiona to be here too. Of all the people to run into, and now Wren had been stuck dealing with her.
Wren smiled and shook her head. “I didn’t mind. If I hadn’t been here, who knows what Fiona would’ve said about you. Everyone would’ve gotten the wrong idea.”
Fiona looked Nora up and down. “You’re Nora?”
She shook her head in disbelief. “That’s impossible. How could Nora be in the ER? Are you just pretending to be her to help Wren out?”
Nora rolled her eyes at Fiona and pulled down her mask. “Open those useless eyes of yours and take a good look. If you still can’t tell, you might as well donate them.” Then, she pulled her mask back up.
That brief glimpse was all Fiona needed. After all, Nora had slapped her hard once before, and just thinking about her made Fiona’s cheek ache,
“Wh-what are you doing here?” Fiona stammered.
Nora gave her a cool glance. “Why shouldn’t I be here?”
Fiona pursed her lips. “Nobody’s seen you all day, and nobody could get you on the phone. We figured you’d skipped town with the money to avoid the consequences.”
“You think everyone’s like you,” Nora said, raising an eyebrow, “ready to run off abroad the second things get messy?”
That hit a nerve, and Fiona felt a jolt of unease. “Well, you shouldn’t be here anyway.” She definitely shouldn’t have been walking out of the ER.
“Then where do you think I should be?” Nora shot back coldly.
Constance had been trying to reach Nora all day, and she’d never imagined Nora was in the ER the whole time. “Nora, have you been in there with Julian all this time?” she asked quickly. “How is he? Is he any better?

Is he going to be okay? Is he awake?”

ora knew how worried she was, so she answered the flood of questions patiently. “He’s out of danger now. Asong as we can get him the antidote, he’ll be fine.”
Constance grabbed Nora’s hands, overcome with emotion. “Thank goodness you were here. Julian’s okay because of you. He picked the right woman.”
Fiona frowned and stayed close to Constanice: “Grandma Weston, she was probably just keeping him company in there. The one who actually saved Julian was the doctor Dr. Blithe brought in from the Caduceus Order.
“And Olivia’s on her way back too. Everyone’s doing what they can to save him. Besides…”
She glanced at Nora. “You’re the reason Julian ended up in the ER in the first place. You were so desperate to get him into bed.”
“I was desperate?” Nora smiled, but there was nothing but ice in her eyes.
That smile gave Fiona the creeps. “Am I wrong?”
Nora looked around and asked Constance, “What time is it? Cordelia still isn’t here?”
“It’s 10 o’clock at night,” Wren answered.
Constance said in a low voice, “Cordelia’s in heart surgery. They said it would take at least eight hours, so she hasn’t come yet.”
It had been over six hours since all this started. And since Cordelia’s people had said at least eight hours, the surgery could just as easily run nine or 10.
Constance couldn’t exactly complain. After all, Cordelia was in surgery saving a life. If word got out online that she’d griped about Cordelia treating an ordinary patient before Julian, the backlash would be unthinkable.
Nora said flatly, “Then call her back and tell her to focus on her surgery. She doesn’t need to come here.”
Constance stared at her, surprised and hopeful. “Cordelia doesn’t need to come?” Does that mean Julian’s going to be all right?
“You can tell Olivia too,” Nora added. “She doesn’t need to rush back on the first flight tomorrow.”
Constance was taken aback, and she wanted to be sure. “You’re certain Julian will be fine even if they don’t come?”
Nora looked up at her and nodded firmly. “Yes. After all, Julian was rushed here from a hotel room with me. If he dies like this, the whole world will laugh at me, and I won’t get a cent of his money.”
The truth was, she wanted Julian to live. But if she brought feelings into it, Constance might not believe her. Talking about money made it much simpler.
