Chapter 266 Credit Where It’s Due

Once Julian was out of the ER, Constance-was utterly drained. At Bess’s urging, she ate a little chicken soup and got some of her strength back.

Just then, she heard Sienna’s voice. “Grandma, is Julian okay?”

Cordelia was hobbling along as fast as she could with Olivia holding her arm. “Constance, how’s Julian?”

“Grandma Weston!” Olivia looked frantic. “Is Julian really out of danger?”

Constance waved a hand, and Bess cleared away the soup and handed her a napkin. By the time she’d wiped her mouth, Sienna and the others were standing in front of her.

Constance pointed at the reporters the bodyguards were holding back, frowning deeply. “Why are there reporters here? Who let them in? Bess, take care of it.”

“Julian’s emergency is all over the trending lists,” Cordelia said. “They were bound to find a way in. And reporters have every right to cover the news.”

She tried to talk Constance around. “If you don’t talk to them, they’ll just make things up. And what people are saying online is ugly. You’re going to have to set the record straight sooner or later.”

Bess had been about to deal with the reporters, but at that, she looked over at Constance.

Constance looked at Cordelia. With her white coat, her graying hair, and a face as lined as Constance’s own, she seemed as kind and gentle as ever. But now, Constance could see what was behind that smile. Cordelia was scheming against her.

Constance was no fool, though. She simply smiled. “You’ve got a point. Go ahead, Bess.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Bess went over to the reporters. “Mrs. Constance Weston has agreed to let you ask your questions. But nothing you record goes out without our approval. No live broadcasts, and no photos of the family get released.”

Bess didn’t need Constance to spell out every last detail. She knew exactly what to do.

The reporters knew the rules when it came to the Westons. They had a right to cover the news, but the Westons had enough money to make their companies disappear.

One by one, they went quiet and stopped chasing anyone down. When the bodyguards waved them aside, they stood back at a distance, listening in and picking out whatever important details they could.

Sienna turned to Constance. “Grandma, is Julian really okay?”

“Yes.” Constance nodded toward the ICU. “He’s out of the ER.”

The curtains were drawn, so Sienna couldn’t see inside. But Constance seemed so calm that it put her at ease too. “I’m so glad he’s okay. I was scared to death. I thought…”

Constance glanced up at her coolly, and that look was enough to make Sienna choke back the tears that had been about to spill over.

“It’s a good thing Dr. Blithe and Olivia were here,” Sienna said. “They’re the only reason Julian’s okay.”

“Let me go in and check on Julian first,” Cordelia said. “I want to make sure he’s really out of danger. His condition is complicated, and an ordinary doctor could easily miss something.”

Constance’s expression cooled. “No need. Nora’s in there with him, and Julian’s stable for now.”

Cordelia looked a little embarrassed and gave Constance an odd look.

Sienna couldn’t help scoffing. “She was nowhere to be found while they were trying to save Julian, and now that he’s okay, she rushes in to play the devoted wife?

“Grandma, how could you leave her alone with him? What if she pulls the plug on him?”

Constance glared at her furiously. “Who told you Nora was nowhere to be found? She was in the ER the whole time, and she’s the one who saved Julian!”

Sienna pouted. “Fiona told me. And there’s no way Nora saved Julian. It was obviously Dr. Corbett, the doctor Dr. Blithe sent for. I heard it from the director myself.

“Grandma, you’re taking an outsider’s side? That’s not fair.”

Constance was so angry that she wanted to slap her. “There is no Dr. Corbett! Nora and the other doctors were the ones in there saving him!”

Sienna looked around but didn’t see Fiona anywhere. She figured Constance had thrown her out.

“Where’s Fiona? Grandma, have her come tell you herself. Dr. Corbett saved Julian. How can you play favorites like this? Not blaming Nora is one thing, but now you’re giving her the credit? That’s a slap in the face to Dr. Blithe and Olivia.”

Constance had no idea where Fiona had gone. Somewhere between the ER and the ICU, both Fiona and Wren had disappeared.

When she couldn’t find Fiona, Sienna pointed at Phil. “Doctor, tell them who saved Julian.”

Phil had been busy calling reporters and getting ready to welcome Cordelia. He still didn’t know the doctor in there had been Nora.

So he turned to Cordelia with a fawning smile. “It was Dr. Corbett, the doctor Dr. Blithe sent for from the Caduceus Order. You saw him go in yourself, Mrs. Weston.”

Constance said sharply, “That wasn’t Dr. Corbett from the Caduceus Order. That was my granddaughter- in-law. You’ve got the wrong person.”

“Huh?” Phil scratched his head, confused, and glanced from Cordelia to the ICU. Then, he said firmly, “No, that can’t be right. The doctor told me so himself. He was definitely from the Caduceus Order.

“The Order’s steward called me too, and I met the doctor at the door myself. How could I get that wrong? It was Dr. Corbett, not your granddaughter-in-law. I’m sure of it!”

The more he talked, the surer he got. He pulled out his phone to show Constance. “Here’s the call from the
