“And one more thing!” Simon-held up the bag of medicine and waved it in front of Cordelia and Olivia. “I said Lazarus pills, not the special medication. They’re not even in the same league. Got it?”
Every word out of Simon’s mouth humiliated Cordelia and Olivia, and he wasn’t pulling any punches.
Both of them turned red with embarrassment. They exchanged a look, confused and shocked.
Cordelia was even more thrown than Olivia. Simon had always treated her with respect. He’d always called her Dr. Blithe, and he’d always been friendly to Olivia.
But just now, he’d clearly shown Nora far more respect, like a servant in front of his master.
Simon handled everything inside and outside the Caduceus Order. He was basically its general manager and head of personnel rolled into one, and he had a lot of power.
He looked down on outsiders, and he carried himself above most people inside the Order too. He was respectful to Cordelia only because she was the deputy head, and even then, it was the respect of a subordinate for a boss, not a servant for his master.
And yet here was that same Simon, bowing and scraping to Nora.
In all her years with the Order, Cordelia had seen him act that way toward only one person, and that was the head of the Order.
But it can’t be Nora! Cordelia told herself.
And then there were the Lazarus pills. They were the Order’s highest-grade medicine, recorded in its formulary, but nobody had ever actually made them.
So where did Simon get them? The questions kept piling up in Cordelia’s head.
Olivia didn’t understand any of this. All she knew was that her cheeks still burned from the humiliation. She looked at Cordelia, silently asking what was going on.
Sienna was even more lost, and she asked straight out, “Isn’t her last name Sinclair? Why are you calling her Ms. Blythe? Are you sure you don’t have the wrong person?”
Blythe and Blithe sounded exactly alike, and Sienna figured Simon must have mixed them up.
Simon’s face darkened even more, and he glared at her. “I don’t have the wrong person. This is for Ms. Blythe. As for why, that’s none of your business!”
Cordelia was seething, but she still wanted to salvage some of her pride. So she asked Simon, “What about the special medication I requested from the Order? Julian’s life depends on it.”
“Oh, the special medication,” Simon said. “I brought that too.”
“Then give it to me,” Cordelia said, holding out her hand. “Julian has Ms. Sinclair, so he doesn’t need it. I’ll use it to save someone else who’s dying.”

But Simon didn’t hand over the bag. “Your request wasn’t approved. Amos, the old man who runs our pharmacy, threw in all three doses of the special medication as a gift for Ms. Sinclair.”
To keep things simple for everyone, and to make sure nobody mixed Nora up with Olivia again, Simon had switched from Ms. Blythe to Ms. Sinclair.
That was another slap in the face for Cordelia. She couldn’t believe her ears. “The special medication was a freebie?”
Simon nodded. “That’s right. And it’s not just the special medication Amos says that from now on, whatever medicine Ms. Sinclair wants, all she has to do is ask. If he’s got it, it’s hers.
“And if he doesn’t, he’ll work in that lab until he drops dead to make it for her.”
Cordelia’s face was thunderous. She felt like they were spitting on her. That’s the special medication! There are only three doses of it in the world!
Amos Crowley, who’d run the Order’s pharmacy for decades, had flatly refused to teach her the formula. If she wanted the medication, she had to pay a fortune for it and go through the whole request process.
And now, he’d handed it to Nora as a freebie!
If what Simon said before had been a slap in the face, this was her pride being thrown on the ground and stomped on.
Simon turned back to Cordelia, his voice grim. “You accused Ms. Sinclair of running a con and dragging the Order’s name through the mud without knowing the facts. You owe her an apology.”
They wanted her to apologize again! Cordelia scowled. She clearly didn’t want to.
Nora saw her expression and scoffed. “Don’t bother apologizing if you don’t mean it. I hold grudges, and I always get even.”
Her face suddenly went cold, and so did her voice. “Cordelia Blithe should apologize to Grandma and Julian, to every patient who’s ever been treated at this hospital, and to the whole city!
“Why?” Nora raised her voice sharply. “Because Cordelia Blithe had patients’ test results altered, and she’s been overtreating them to cheat them out of their hard-earned money!”
Cordelia went pale, and she snapped, “Nora Sinclair! What on earth are you talking about? Lies like that damage my reputation and the hospital’s, and they insult every doctor and nurse here. That’s slander!”
Then, she gave Nora a sharp order. “Now! Right now! You will formally apologize to this hospital, to its staff, and to me!”
The press was right there. If this got out, people would run with it, and the damage to her reputation would be enormous.
