Chapter 270 The Perfume Trap

Finished

Cordelia was shocked and scared. Once she’d collected herself, she decided her first job was to calm Nora down. She couldn’t let Nora say one more wild thing.

She looked at Nora and softened her tone. “Today was my fault. I didn’t check whether the Caduceus Order actually sent Felix, and I assumed Simon was bringing the medication for me.

“One coincidence led to another, and I jumped to the conclusion that you were taking credit that wasn’t yours. I’m truly sorry.”

With that, Cordelia bowed low to Nora, her stooped back bending even further. It was a deeply sincere apology.

Olivia, on the other hand, was furious. She reached out to help Cordelia up. “Grandma, why are you apologizing? We haven’t done anything wrong…”

Cordelia cut her off. “That’s beside the point. We were wrong about this, and I owe her an apology.” She looked up at Olivia. “You apologize to Ms. Sinclair too.”

Olivia met her eyes. They were clouded with age, but they carried an unmistakable message, and Olivia felt a jolt of unease. “Grandma…”

What Nora said can’t actually be true, can it? Is that why Grandma’s backing down?

“Apologize,” Cordelia said.

Olivia was rattled, and she didn’t dare make a halfhearted job of it. She turned to Nora and bowed just as low. “Nora, I’m sorry. We were wrong about you!”

Nora watched both of them apologize so sincerely. Then, she scoffed. “You didn’t want to apologize earlier, and now it’s too late. And like I said, I’m not the one you owe an apology.”

Constance still didn’t want the two families to have a complete falling-out, especially with Julian’s health still on her mind.

Once again, she tried gently to talk Nora down. “Julian’s still in intensive care, and we don’t know what’s going to happen next. Why don’t we focus on how he’s doing first?

“And I can’t believe Cordelia would do something like that. She’s Dr. Blithe. The whole country respects her. Isn’t there some kind of misunderstanding here?”

She was afraid they’d still have to ask Cordelia for help someday. If they burned that bridge now, they’d have nowhere left to turn.

On top of that, Constance figured that even if Cordelia had her own agenda, and even if some of it was aimed at Nora, she wouldn’t dare go too far when it came to treating patients.

Nora looked down at her. “Grandma, I know you trust her. But did you know that everything that happened to Julian and me today was a setup? Him ending up in the ER, fighting for his life, all of it?”

Constance wasn’t sure what to believe. “No… That can’t be.”

Olivia was still bent over, waiting to be forgiven. When she heard that, her head snapped up. “Nora, Grandma and I have spent more than 20 years treating Julian!

“We want him to live more than you do. More than Grandma Weston does, even!”

The more Olivia talked, the angrier she got. “Grandma and I have poured more money and energy into Julian’s treatment than I can even count.

“For as long as I can remember, Grandma’s told me we have to cure Julian, whatever it takes, even if it costs us our lives. I even took-”

Cordelia cut her off just in time. “Olivia, that’s enough!”

Olivia wasn’t ready to let it go, and she honestly felt wronged. “Grandma, I can’t let Nora slander you like that and wreck things between our families! She has to apologize to us!”

She and Cordelia had given so much to treat Julian. She’d truly meant it. If curing him cost her her life, so be it.

But now, Nora was accusing them of setting him up and claiming that Cordelia was the reason he’d ended up in the ER! Olivia refused to take the blame for that!

She glared at Nora. “Nora Sinclair, apologize!”

Nora only gave a mocking laugh. “Brent Hammond, that fake lawyer, was wearing cologne laced with an aphrodisiac. I was locked in that interrogation room with him, so I’d breathe it in, and it would start working on me.

“If it got to me and I lost control, stuck in a locked room alone with a man, you can imagine what would’ve happened.

“Then Julian would show up and walk in on that ugly scene. Do you think we’d still be married after that?”

Cordelia stayed calm and collected. “That’s between the two of you.”

Nora gave a scornful laugh and went on. “That’s one way it could’ve played out. It only targeted me, to wreck my marriage to Julian. Now, here’s the other way.

“Say I kept it together, but the cologne was all over me. When Julian came to pick me up, the drug would kick in, and I’d drag him off to a hotel because I couldn’t wait.

“Once we got into bed, the drug would get into his system when he breathed it in and kissed me, and it would trigger an attack. He’d end up in the ER, and you’d hold his life over my head. I’d have to beg you to treat him, and I might even offer to divorce him myself.”

Cordelia didn’t panic. She just gave Nora a cold smile. “That’s all speculation on your part. The reason I wasn’t here to save Julian is that I was performing heart surgery on another patient.

“That operation normally takes at least eight hours, and I finished it in just over six.
