Chapter 271 A Thirty-Minute Surgery
Finished
Cordelia’s question-set off a wave of outrage. After all, almost everyone there was an ordinary person.
“Dr. Blithe didn’t do anything wrong. Doctors save people based on how sick they are, not on who’s got the most money.”
“You can’t stop an operation halfway through! What, rich people’s lives matter, but ours don’t?”
Then, they started turning on Nora.
“And here I thought she was the real victim. Turns out she’s just bitter because Dr. Blithe wouldn’t stop a surgery to save Mr. Weston first!”
“Exactly. Olivia Blithe rushed back from the mountains and left all those poor, sick villagers without treatment. That’s already more than enough. What more does she want?”
“So rich people get to act like our lives don’t count?”
Cordelia raised a hand to quiet everyone down, then played the gracious, forgiving elder. “All right, everyone, let’s not get worked up. Ms. Sinclair was only worried. People can get a little selfish when it comes to their families. That’s understandable.
“I won’t ask her to apologize anymore. As long as Mr. Weston is all right, that’s what matters. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have other things to take care of.”
Not only did Cordelia drop her demand for an apology, but she even stood up for Nora and told everyone to go easy on her.
To the crowd, that made her seem incredibly generous, and it made them even angrier with Nora. They figured she thought her money and power meant everyone had to get out of her way.
“Dr. Blithe, don’t let her walk all over you. She owes you an apology!”
“Nobody gets to be that selfish. Everyone’s life matters. Rich or poor, a life is a life!”
“Apologize! Apologize! Say sorry to Dr. Blithe, and say sorry to the rest of us who aren’t rich!”
Nora looked around at the crowd. After Cordelia’s little speech, most of them had turned on her. They were all demanding an apology in one voice, and they were getting more worked up by the second.
Even Constance was afraid that someone in the crowd might lose it and come after Nora.
This was a hospital, after all, and they were right outside the ICU. Everyone here had family fighting for their lives, either in the ER or on life support, and plenty of them were scraping together money to keep their loved ones alive.
Worried, Constance pulled Nora back and stood in front of her. “Nora, these people are out for blood. You should get out of here before something happens.”
Nora looked at Constance, stooped and frail, standing in front of her like a shield, and she was deeply
moved.

She stepped forward and gave Cordelia a sharp look. “Don’t try to turn these people against me by making this about rich versus poor. What you did is a lot worse than that.
“The heart surgery you did today was a pacemaker implant. An experienced doctor can do one in 30 minutes. Even the greenest surgeon would only take an hour or so!
“But you lied to us and said it would take eight hours at the very least! The kind of heart surgery that takes that long is valve surgery.
“On top of that, you weren’t even the surgeon originally assigned to that case. You only took it so you’d have a good excuse not to come save Julian!”
Constance was stunned all over again. She stared at Cordelia in disbelief. “Is what Nora said true?”
Cordelia glared darkly at Nora and didn’t say a word.
Nora gave a cold laugh. “The great Dr. Blithe, supposedly the greatest miracle healer in the country, and she can’t answer a simple question?
“Because it’s the truth, and anyone can check. You’re not planning to change the medical records, are you, Dr. Blithe?
“Or does the great Dr. Blithe want to admit she’s not experienced enough to finish a simple pacemaker implant in under an hour, so it took her six?”
Cordelia’s expression darkened even more, and she forced out an excuse. “That wasn’t my only surgery.”
She couldn’t really answer that. She could hardly admit that she wasn’t skilled enough, and that was why the surgery had taken so long.
Nora scoffed. “Don’t bother making excuses. That was your only surgery. You didn’t even dare take on a major heart operation that can run anywhere from three to 10 hours, because you needed to make sure you’d have time to name your terms, watch me beg, and only then save him.
“You’d even worked out that Julian could hold on for eight hours at most. And you’re still saying his attack had nothing to do with you?”
Nora took out her phone. “I’ve got the time Cordelia Blithe went into surgery, the heart patient’s medical records, and his complaint against her, all right here. Scan the QR code and see for yourselves.”
There was no big screen around, or Nora would have just put it up for everyone to see.
Constance turned to Bess. “Take Nora’s phone around and let everyone scan it, one by one. Especially the reporters.”
Simon scanned it first, his expression grave. “Ms. Sinclair, I’ll save a copy and have it printed out. It’ll be easier to see that way. I’ll also be handing it over to the Caduceus Order’s oversight board.
“Dr. Blithe is part of our Order. If this is true, it’s a serious violation, and she’ll have to face the consequences.”
