Chapter 277 No Strings to Pull
Only then did Gideon look away and drive on.

In those few moments, Olivia pulled herself together. She covered her face with her hands and started to sob. “I’m sorry, Gideon. I was just so upset. I’m so worried about Grandma.
“I’ve never been through anything like this. I don’t know what to do. Grandma isn’t like that. I… I’m sorry. It’s not your fault. It’s Grandma’s fault and mine.
“But I really don’t know what to do. What if Grandma gets locked up for something she didn’t do? She’s so old. What if I lose her? I’ll be all alone. I won’t have anything left.” Then, she broke down sobbing.
Olivia’s tears were half real and half put on, but the sound of her crying and the helpless things she said would melt anyone’s heart.
Gideon softened right away. “I’m not blaming you. Come on, don’t cry. First, get somebody to take those trending posts down. Then, call the papers and buy up whatever they haven’t run yet. Whatever it costs.”
Olivia quickly wiped away her tears. “I knew I couldn’t do this without you, Gideon. You’ll always be my favorite person. What would I do without you?”
Gideon felt a flutter at that, but it stung too.
Olivia liked him, but only the way a little sister liked a big brother. It would never be anything more than that. He knew it, but every time she called him her favorite, he still felt that flutter.
Olivia hurried to make some calls and told people to get the trending topics taken down and buy up the
stories.
But she’d barely made the calls when the answer came back. “We’re sorry. Our job is to report the truth. The public deserves to know what really happened.”
Olivia lowered the phone and looked at Gideon in despair. “Gideon, the posts won’t come down, and nobody will take our money. The stories are already out.”
When she checked her phone again, she saw right away that the trending news had changed.
The top headline read, “Total Reversal! Dr. Blithe Didn’t Save the City’s Richest Man After All! She Used Her Reputation to Grab the Credit!”
Right below it was another. “Dr. Blithe’s Eight-Hour Heart Surgery Actually Took One Hour, and It Was Over Before Mr. Weston Collapsed,”
The next one said, “Dr. Blithe Held a Grudge Over Her Forced Apology and Used Mr. Weston’s Life to Threaten His Wife.”
Another read, “Dr. Blithe Never Brought In the Caduceus Order or the Special Medication. She Didn’t Save Mr. Weston.”
And another, “Blithe Institute Annex Suspected of Forging Records, Insurance Fraud, Fake Diagnoses, Unnecessary Surgeries, and Organ Trafficking.”

The list went on and on.
Every headline, big or small, had her grandmother’s name in it, and each one was worse than the last. The whole internet was in an uproar.
Olivia’s head spun. She was shaking with despair, and she gripped her phone so hard her knuckles went white. “They all turned down the money. Is it because Grandma Weston’s helping Nora too?
“I’ve been so good to Grandma Weston. I practically think of her as my own grandmother. How could she help Nora instead of me?”
That made Gideon frown again. “Olivia, right now, we just need those posts taken down. Call Zane. He’s got more pull.”
Olivia felt a glimmer of hope. “You’re right. There’s still Zane. He’ll help me!”
The Whitlocks were one of the most powerful families around. One word from Zane, and the trending topics would vanish in no time. He could even turn the truth on its head.
Olivia hurried to call him. He didn’t pick up right away. The phone had almost stopped ringing when the call finally connected.
“Zane…” Olivia choked up the moment she spoke, and she was crying too hard to go on.
Any man who heard her like that would be worried sick.
Zane was no different. The moment he heard her crying, he gov anxious, but he was hesitant too. “Um… Ms. Blithe, please don’t cry. Just tell me what’s going on. I’m kind of busy right now.”
He covered the phone as he talked and glanced over at Augusta. She was watching him like a hawk, silently telling him to wrap it up.
Olivia sniffled, still sounding tearful. “I wouldn’t bother you if I had anywhere else to turn, Zane.
“But I really don’t know what else to do. My grandma’s been slandered and set up, and now the Department of Health has taken her in. The truth isn’t even out yet, and it’s already all over the trending lists. Her reputation’s ruined.
“Zane, my grandma has given so much to medicine. She’s sacrificed so much. She’s nothing like what the news is saying. Please, will you help me?
“It doesn’t have to be anything big. Just put in a word with the papers and let me make them an offer for the stories. They can still run them once the investigation’s done.”
She figured a story this big had probably reached Zane already, and if not, he’d look it up the second she mentioned it.
So she made her request clear and direct, while gently pointing out that she wasn’t trying to stop anyone from reporting. She just wanted them to wait for the results. It was a very skillful pitch.
