Chapter 281 Vultures at the Door

Constance’s face was hard. “That’s none of your business. I’ll make my own arrangements, and you don’t get to call Nora an outsider. Get out!”
Harlan pointed at Nora. “Look at her. Last time, she cost us the Orion bid. That was at least $1,000,000,000 in losses. You and Julian covered it, so we let it go.
“But this time, it was an international partnership. We’re not just losing money. We’re losing the overseas market. Maybe I can let it slide, but ask the board if they will.”
He opened the door and let the board members in.
One was rubbing his nose, another was shaking out the hand the door had caught, and a few others looked a lot less fired up than before.
But the moment they saw Julian lying motionless in the bed, they got their nerve back.
“Ma’am, we’re not trying to kick a man while he’s down. But this time, Mr. Weston went too far. How could he walk out of a meeting halfway through over a woman? The deal fell through, and it cost the company.”
“The company doesn’t belong to Mr. Weston alone, and it doesn’t belong to just your family either. Those of us who’ve been shareholders for years have our hard-earned money tied up in it.”
“Last time, we lost $1,000,000,000, and you and Mr. Weston covered it out of your own pockets, so we didn’t make a fuss.”
“This time, losing the overseas market is going to cost at least $5,000,000,000, maybe even $10,000,000,000. Are you and Mr. Weston going to cover that too?”
“Even if you can, what about next time? What if Mr. Weston walks out of another meeting over a woman and the company loses so much that it goes under?”
“Ma’am, what Mr. Weston did was completely irresponsible. We don’t think he’s fit to be CEO anymore. As longtime shareholders, we have the right to replace him for the sake of the company’s future.”
“So which will it be? We can nominate a new CEO, or you can recommend one yourself. As long as it isn’t Mr. Weston, we’ll go along with it.”
Before Constance could say a word, the board members had chimed in one after another, making it perfectly clear why they’d come.
Finally, a bald man with a potbelly added, “And you and Mr. Weston need to make up for what the company lost this time too.”
Constance looked at the board members who usually treated her with so much respect. Now, they were coming at her hard, all because Julian was lying in a hospital bed and hadn’t woken up yet.
She’d seen this coming, but now that it was actually happening, she was shaking with anger and struggling to breathe. She pointed at them, unable to get the words out. “You… You…”
Nora quickly steadied her and rubbed a few pressure points to calm her down. “Grandma, don’t get upset.

Sit down and rest. I’ll handle this.”

Once Constance was breathing a little easier, Nora poured her a glass of warm water and put it in her hands.
Then, she walked up to Harlan. “Did you bring these people, Uncle Harlan?”
She was smiling slightly, and she’d addressed him politely, but something about her still made Harlan’s skin crawl.
But then he reminded himself that Nora was just a woman, and she came from the Sinclairs, a minor family at best. There was nothing to be afraid of.
So he answered, “News of Julian’s emergency is everywhere. As board members, of course they’re worried, so they all came to see him.”
Nora scoffed. “You say you came to see Julian, but you walked in without even looking at him or asking how he’s doing. You just couldn’t wait to kick him while he’s down, bully his family, and take his job away?”
They really took her for a pushover.
She swept a scornful look over every one of them. “You’re all getting on in years. You’ve practically got both feet in the grave. Don’t you even know better than to burn your bridges before it’s really over?”
The whole group scowled. They’d just been called old, half-dead, and clueless about basic decency.
Roger Stiles, one of the board members, looked Nora up and down. “So you’re Mrs. Weston. Nora Sinclair, right?”
Nora glanced up at him coolly. “That’s right.”
“You’re a walking disaster,” Roger said. “Twice now, you’ve cost this company a fortune. If I were you, I’d be too ashamed to show my face here.”
Nora shot back calmly, “You’d have to have some shame first.”
“You-” Roger sputtered, but Nora cut him off again. “You don’t care how Julian’s doing at all. You just can’t wait to replace him, and you have the nerve to lecture me about shame?”
Roger had never run into a woman with such a sharp tongue. He couldn’t win, and his face turned purple with rage.
Harlan looked at Nora. “Don’t try to change the subject. The board came here today to replace the CEO. Julian has already hurt the company because of you.
“Anyone who lets a pretty face get in the way of his work and costs the company money isn’t fit to be CEO
“As for the board members, they aren’t family. If they ask about Julian, that’s a kindness. If they don’t, that’s their right. It’s understandable.
“And you’re an outsider too. Company business is none of yours.”
