“No,” Julian said. It was all hazy. He felt like he remembered and didn’t at the same time.

Nora still felt a little embarrassed thinking about it, and she blushed as she answered. “We were… We were right about to, you know, and you suddenly passed out. So I got you to the hospital.”

She wasn’t going to tell him that during the attack, he hadn’t recognized anyone. He’d lost all reason, and he really would have strangled her, or anyone else who got near him. If he knew, he’d be so afraid of hurting her that he’d keep his distance.

Julian didn’t quite believe her. “Is that really what happened?”

Nora felt like he was seeing right through her. “Uh-huh,” she said vaguely. “I’m done eating. I’ll go change, and then I’m heading out.”

Bess had brought a change of clothes for her that morning too.

Julian watched Nora go into the bathroom, then set down his half-eaten bowl.

He closed his eyes and thought back to yesterday. A few bits came back to him. He’d turned into something terrifying. Was I choking someone?

The memories were too hazy to pin down, and he tried for a long time to remember.

He didn’t open his eyes until Nora came out in fresh clothes. When he looked up at her, the first thing he noticed was the bruise on her neck. He frowned. “What happened to your neck?”

Nora touched her neck. Only then did she notice how much it hurt, and she remembered how Julian had nearly strangled her yesterday.

She’d been so tense and busy that she’d forgotten all about it, and forgotten the pain too.

Nora smiled and dropped her hand. “I must have scratched myself by accident. I didn’t even notice until you said something. It’s nothing. I’d better go.”

Julian’s expression darkened at her words, but he didn’t call her on it. “Okay. I’ll send you Joss’s contact info and his address. If you need anything, just tell Miles.”

“Okay.” Nora was in a hurry. She grabbed her phone and turned to go.

But when she got to the door, she spun around, ran back to Julian, and quickly bent down to kiss him on the lips. “I’ll be back with good news.”

He’d walked out on his work for her and cost the company. So she’d close the deal for him and make up for what he’d lost.

He wasn’t the only one giving his all to this marriage. Now that she was sure how she felt, she’d give it everything she had too, because she had him.

The sudden kiss caught Julian off guard. He watched her bright, dazzling smile, watched her walk out the door, and touched the lips she’d just kissed. For a moment, his feelings were all tangled up.

It should have made him happy. Instead, it felt sweet and bitter and painful all at once.

A little while later, Julian picked up his phone. After thinking it over, he called Olivia.

Olivia hadn’t slept all night. She was still trying to get Cordelia released on bail, and she was completely overwhelmed.

When Julian’s name suddenly popped up on her screen, she was thrilled. “Julian, you’re awake? How are you feeling? Does anything hurt?”

“I’m fine,” Julian said flatly. “I need to ask you something.”

Olivia was already stressed and lightheaded, and hearing that only put her more on edge. “Did Nora tell you my grandma had someone douse that lawyer in cologne and then refused to save you?

“That’s not what happened. There’s no proof. She’s just making-”

Julian cut her off coldly. “Nora didn’t say a thing. I don’t know anything about it.”

Olivia stopped short. After a moment of silence, she choked up. “I’m sorry. They took my grandma away, and I’ve been running around all night. I’m on my own, and I don’t know what to do. My head’s a mess.

“Julian, nobody will help me. I don’t know where to turn.” Then, she started to sob.

Anyone else would’ve felt sorry for her.

But Julian only frowned. “I called to ask you about my medicine. Is there something special in what you’ve been giving me?”

Olivia hesitated for a moment, but she didn’t deny it. “Yes. It’s a very special herb. We’ve been growing it for more than 10 years.”

“Can it cure me?” Julian asked.

“With the research Grandma and I have done so far, we still can’t cure you completely,” Olivia said. “But as long as you keep taking this herb, your illness can become a chronic condition you can live with.”

“And only the Blithes have it?”

Olivia knew exactly what he was thinking, and she answered with total confidence. “That’s right. Grandma has

spent 20 years studying your illness. Every medicine she’s ever given you has been fine-tuned over the

years.

“If something happens to my grandma, there’ll be one less person in the world who can treat you, and your chances of getting better will drop by half. I’m still young, and I don’t have her experience.”

She was letting Julian know that nothing could happen to her or Cordelia. Otherwise, all he could do was wait to die.

Count on Nora? Yeah, right. As far as Olivia was concerned, Nora had just gotten lucky this time. Curing Julian for good was impossible, and Olivia was absolutely sure of that.
