Chapter 289 The Count’s Friend

Finished

With all that in mind, Mandy walked out in front, head held high, glowing with pride.

Outside the lobby, she looked around at the luxury cars parked out front. First, she made sure Nora’s car wasn’t among them. Then,/she turned to Joss. “Mr. Joss, which car is your friend in?”

Joss was looking too. He pointed at a Bugatti Veyron by the entrance. “That one.”

He hurried over, clearly excited.

Mandy could see how excited he was, and she figured that if she won over Joss, she could win over the count’s friend and the count himself too. That would get her into some very elite circles.

So she trotted after him in her heels and even beat him to the car. “Let me get the door for our guest. It’s all part of the service.”

Mandy eagerly stepped up and reached for the car door, but she couldn’t find a handle. All of a sudden, things got awkward.

She didn’t want to admit she didn’t know how to open it, so she just stood there, trying to figure out whether there was something she was supposed to touch.

Joss looked at her. “Ms. Sinclair, please step aside. The door opens on its own.”

Mandy was even more embarrassed. She felt like a total idiot, and she scrambled to save face. “Oh, I was just thinking about how to address our honored guest.”

She stepped aside and watched the door slowly swing open. Then, she bowed her head slightly. “Welcome to the Wyndmere. I’m Mandy Sinclair, and I’m in charge here today. If you need anything at all, I’m at your service.”

Someone gave a soft, cool scoff that sent a chill down Mandy’s spine. Then came the last voice in the world she wanted to hear. “Oh, great. Then I won’t be shy about putting you to work.”

Mandy’s head snapped up. When she saw Nora smiling mockingly at her, her own smile twisted into something ugly. She ground out through clenched teeth, “Nora Sinclair! You again!”

Nora looked down at her, smiling. “Yep. Me again. And here you are, rushing to wait on me.”

She shook her head as she looked Mandy over like a bug. “Mandy, you really love playing waitress, don’t you? You keep running over to serve me. I guess that’s what happens when your mom was the other woman. You don’t even act like a rich man’s kid. You act like the hired help.”

Joss was staying at the Wyndmere, so Nora had known Mandy would be there too, just waiting for a chance to humiliate her.

After calling Constance to ask around, Nora figured there had to be some other reason Joss hadn’t gone with the Weston Group.

So to play it safe, she’d turned to a friend from her previous life, Count Ansel, whose migraines she’d once cured. Then, she’d come to see Joss as the count’s friend.

Otherwise, if she’d shown up at the Wyndmere under her own name, she’d never have gotten to see Joss. She’d only have wasted time and handed Mandy a chance to humiliate her.

“You!” Mandy was so angry that she wanted to curse Nora out.

But by then, Joss had collected himself. He asked Nora respectfully, “You’re Count Ansel’s friend?”

Nora slowly nodded. “Yes, Mr. Joss. Can we talk now?”

Joss looked at her, exasperated but impressed, and respectful too. “Count Anseltold me about you. Of course we can talk. But I won’t break the contract unless you can convince me.”

When Mandy saw that Joss was going to give Nora a chance, she panicked. “Mr. Joss, she doesn’t even know Count Ansel. She’s obviously lying to trick you.”

Then, she glared at Nora. “You’ve never even been abroad, and you don’t have any friends overseas. How would you know Count Ansel? Why didn’t I know about this? You’re lying to get close to Mr. Joss, aren’t you?”

Nora scoffed. “Why do you need to know who my friends are? You’re acting like I need your permission.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Well? When your mom became the other woman and you were born a bastard, did anybody tell me? Did anyone ask my permission?”

“You…” Mandy’s face twisted with rage.

Nora gave her a faint smile. “Quit stammering ‘you, you, you’ like a broken record. Hurry up and take me inside. Oh, and my heels are killing me. Get me a pair of slippers.”

Mandy wasn’t about to wait on her. “You’re here to steal our deal, and you want me to wait on you? Dream on!”

Nora just shrugged. She hadn’t come here today to put Mandy in her place. She’d come to talk business with Joss.

Adrian watched Nora with an odd, searching, fascinated look. “You’re always full of surprises. You’re quite a catch.” His feelings about her were getting stranger and stranger.

Nora looked up at him and gave him a faint smile. “Too bad I’m already taken.”

When Mandy saw her smile at Adrian like that, she pulled him close and glared at Nora, muttering through gritted teeth, “Homewrecker. All you know how to do is throw yourself at men!”

Nora didn’t get angry. She shot right back, “And you’re a sewer rat. You’re ugly, you stink, and no man would ever look at you twice.”
