Chapter 293 One Little Word

Augusta scooted away the tiniest bit, not even an inch.

Nora noticed she was still leaning toward her, clearly waiting to be coaxed, and she couldn’t help laughing. “Okay, don’t be mad. I’ve been really busy the last couple of days.

“I didn’t mean to forget you here. Won’t you forgive me?”

Seeing Augusta act just like a little kid didn’t bother Nora at all. If anything, she felt like she ought to coax her out of it.

It was a strange feeling. Nora didn’t usually feel much of anything for strangers.

Augusta just hugged the kitten and gave another “Hmph.”

So Nora hooked an arm through hers, the way she always sweet-talked Rosalind. “Come on, ma’am, don’t be mad. Pouting isn’t a good look on you.”

Augusta finally turned to look at her. “Is that how you sweet-talk someone? You walk in and don’t even call me Grandma once. All you say is ma’am, ma’am, ma’am…”

Nora quickly cut in before she could get going. “Grandma, it’s all my fault. Please don’t be mad. It won’t happen again.”

Augusta beamed. “You’re okay, and you came back for me. That’s all that matters. I stopped being mad a long time ago. I was just mad you wouldn’t call me Grandma.

“Tilly, don’t you go calling other old ladies Grandma, you hear?”

She took Nora’s hand. “And don’t worry. I chased off all those bad people who were picking on you!

“From now on, if anybody picks on my Tilly, I’ll cuss out their whole family tree!”

Nora could feel how much Augusta adored her, so she sat there quietly and listened. Then, she glanced around the room.

She noticed the room looked different. There was a cat bed, a cat tree, a little cat house, and cat toys, all of them designer brands. Then, she spotted a whole row of clothes for an older woman, all the latest styles that wealthy ladies were wearing.

Nora frowned and looked at Augusta, who was well groomed and clearly well cared for. She was suspicious. “Grandma, did you buy all this, or did your family?”

All of it looked expensive, and Nora couldn’t make sense of it. Isn’t she supposed to have dementia? Didn’t somebody trick her into working as a cleaning lady? Or is she actually some rich old lady?

Augusta looked at her. “You bought them for me. Did you forget?”

Nora was stunned. “Me? I bought them?”

Augusta gave her a doting look. “Oh, you. You’re not even as old as I am and

than mine: You bought all of this…”

Nora didn’t know what to say. So has your family been by?”

Augusta nodded. “Yes. Your third and fourth brothers both carne to see me. They said I should stay with you, that you’re wonderful. But they told me not to tell you they came. They don’t want you to know.

“They said if you found out, you wouldn’t let me go home.”

Over in one of the hotel’s private villas, Zane would’ve been baffled to hear that. That wasn’t what he and Ethan had said at all!

Nora was at a loss for words.

That explained it.

So Augusta had grandsons, more than two of them, even. They’d come to see her and bought all these expensive things, then said they were from Nora.

Nora figured they were using their grandmother to cash in somehow, and they’d kept it quiet because they were afraid Nora would send Augusta back and ruin their scheme.

Thinking about what those two grandsons were up to made Nora frown in disgust.

Part of her didn’t want to get involved anymore. She was afraid those greedy grandsons would latch on to her like leeches.

She looked at Augusta. “Ma’am…”

Augusta looked up and corrected her, annoyed again. “Call me Grandma. Are you taking Grandma home

now?”

Augusta looked so hopeful that Nora felt her resolve crumble.

“What would you do if I didn’t take you home?”

Augusta answered honestly. “I’d go out and look for Tilly. I’d keep looking and looking. I’d dig through trash, climb trees, sleep under bridges. I’d find my Tilly no matter what.”

That did it. Nora couldn’t stay hard-hearted anymore. She couldn’t even stand to imagine this sweet little old lady digging through trash and sleeping under a bridge.

Just thinking about it broke her heart. She wanted to track down those two good-for-nothing grandsons and beat them senseless.

Nora told Augusta, “Grandma, I’m married, so I can’t really take you home with me. How about I take you to my own little place instead? My cousin Wren lives there, and so does my grandma.

“I’ll come visit you all the time. Okay?”

Augusta stroked the kitten’s fur. “You’re not throwing me away?”

It was almost funny, but it made Nora’s heart ache. Augusta must have been abandoned so many times

that she couldn’t help worrying about it.

She smiled and promised “No, I’m not.”
