Chapter 307 Down on His Knees

Constance understood that, so she didn’t hesitate to take it on. She turned to Harlan. “You and Nora made a deal, so take your loss like a man. Transfer your shares to Nora and move off the estate. From now on, you have nothing to do with us.”

With a heavy thud, Harlan dropped to his knees in front of Constance, sobbing his heart out. “Mom, I know I was wrong. Please forgive me just this once. I’ll change, I swear. I’ll be the most devoted son you could ask for. I’ll take care of you for the rest of your life.”

Constance turned away from him. “Your real mother was your father’s mistress. I’m just the woman he married. Once you leave this estate, you won’t even be half a son to me, so don’t call me that.”

Her expression was cold. “Get up. Leave on your own. Don’t make us have you thrown out. It’s undignified.”

Harlan got up off the floor. “You’re the only mother I’ve got. I’ll prove it to you.”

With that, he turned around, climbed onto the chair, and took down his mother’s memorial portrait, the one he’d only just hung up.

He held it in his hands and looked at it for a moment. Then, he squeezed his eyes shut and hurled it to the floor. The glass shattered with a crash, and shards rained down over his mother’s smiling face.

Then, Harlan tore down every other picture he’d hung and smashed them on the floor too, just to prove how determined he was.

When he was done, he rushed over to Constance and dropped to his knees again. “See? You’re the only mother I acknowledge. She was just a mistress. By the old family rules, I wasn’t even allowed to call her Mom. Won’t you please give me one more chance?”

To Constance, this side of Harlan was terrifying. He could treat his own mother like this, even after her death, just to prove his devotion to someone else.

A man who could put on an act like that was far too dangerous. Keeping him around would only be asking for trouble.

Constance shook her head. “If you’d shown some backbone and a little respect for your mother, I might have softened. But now…”

She paused, then said firmly, “I don’t dare keep a man who’d disown his own mother anywhere near me. Leave the estate.

“Pack up and go with some dignity. Don’t make a scene. You’re in the wrong here.”

Harlan kept begging, but when Constance wouldn’t budge, he looked up at her. “Mother, I’m on my knees here. Can’t you give me just one more chance?”

Constance didn’t waver. “Get up and go.”

The sight of her father so frantic unnerved Sienna. She looked at Olivia, pleading. “Olivia, can you help my dad? I don’t want to get kicked out of the family too.”

Olivia looked torn. “I’d love to help, but your grandma doesn’t like me anymore either, and Julian definitely won’t listen to the. You’d be better off begging Nora. They all listen to her.”

She leaned a little on that last part, as if she were dropping a hint on purpose, and Harlan caught it.

Sienna turned to Nora and begged her quietly, “Nora, my dad really knows he messed up. Please don’t kick him off the estate. Can’t you give him one more chance?”

Before Nora could answer, Olivia cut in. “Sienna, that’s not sincere enough. Nora won’t agree to that.”

Sienna glanced at her father, who was still on his knees, and got the message right away. She dropped to her knees in front of Nora with a thud. “Nora, I used to pick on you all the time, and I’m sorry. But my dad just lost his head this time. Please give him another chance. I’ll do anything you say, no questions asked.”

Harlan shuffled around on his knees until he was facing Nora. Then, he slapped himself across the face. “Nora, I was arrogant and full of myself. I never should have made that bet with you.

“I admit I was wrong. I’m slapping myself, and I’m apologizing to you. Please forgive me just this once and treat it like a joke. I’m begging you.”

For an elder like Harlan to kneel and beg someone so much younger for mercy was humiliating enough. If word of this got out, people would tear Nora apart behind her back.

And if she refused to forgive him now and wouldn’t let it go, the gossip would be even worse. Just like that, Harlan and Sienna had backed Nora into a corner.

Nora looked at the two of them kneeling in front of her, her expression cool. “So you’re begging me?”

“Yes! We’re begging you!” Harlan and Sienna both hung their heads in shame.

As far as Harlan was concerned, as long as he stayed on the Weston estate, he still had a shot. Julian didn’t have long to live anyway. He could swallow a little humiliation for now.

Sienna’s reasoning was much simpler. She just wanted to stay with her dad.

Nora didn’t smile. She just looked at them coolly, then turned to Harlan. “If Count Ansel hadn’t come, if I hadn’t signed that contract, we’d be the ones getting thrown out right now.

“Uncle Harlan,” Nora said quietly, “you’d have been even harder on us than this. You wouldn’t have given us a chance to beg anyone. So why are you guilt-tripping me?

“You expect me to show you mercy because you’re my elder. But you’re the younger one where Grandma’s concerned. Did you ever stop to think about her? You didn’t!”

Nora’s flat, decisive words made Harlan squirm with guilt, but he still tried to defend himself. “No, I was just-
