Chapter 308 Just Say the Word

“Everyone wants something,” Harlan said. “Who doesn’t love money? Who doesn’t want to be the richest man in the city? I just went after what I wanted.”
Then, he looked up at Nora sharply. “What will it take for you to treat this bet like a joke?”
Nora raised an eyebrow, then turned to Olivia with a slight smile. “Sienna and Ms. Blithe are so close, and Ms. Blithe has such a kind heart. Honestly, she’s such a saint it’s almost blinding.
“Uncle Harlan, why don’t you ask Ms. Blithe for help? As long as she puts in a good word for you, we can call the whole thing a joke.”
A moment ago, Olivia had deliberately pushed Harlan to beg Nor, hoping to back Nora into a moral
corner.
Now, Nora was simply handing the problem right back to Olivia and turning the guilt trip on her. She wanted to see how Olivia would handle it.
As soon as Harlan heard that, he swiveled around on his knees again and turned to Olivia. “Olivia, help me out. You’re over at our place all the time, and I watched you grow up. I’ve always treated you well.
“Just put in a good word for me. Ask Nora to go easy on me.”
Sienna stood up, slipped her arm through Olivia’s, and looked at her with naive hope. “Olivia, you always say we’re like sisters. You’ll help me, won’t you?
“I don’t want to be separated from my parents. I want to keep living on the Weston estate with them.”
Now that things had swung back around to her, Olivia stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do. “Begging me won’t help either of you. Nora’s the one who decides everything. She-”
Nora calmly cut her off. “Don’t worry, Ms. Blithe. I won’t make this hard for you. I’m not going to make you get down on your knees and beg. All you have to do is say one word on their behalf, and I’ll drop it.”
Before Olivia could object, Nora raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you the kindhearted one, Ms. Blithe? Aren’t you and Sienna supposed to be so close? Why is saying one nice thing so hard?”
Olivia couldn’t help glaring at Nora with resentment. She opened her mouth, but she just couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Nora’s request seemed simple enough. All Olivia had to do was put in a good word for Harlan.
But the moment she did, she’d clearly be siding against Julian and Constance, and Nora would succeed in driving a wedge between them.
Then, Julian would like her even less, and whatever little affection Constance still had for her would vanish completely.
And it would make Nora look so generous! It would even win her points with that idiot Sienna!
But if she refused to speak up for them, Sienna, who’d always tagged along as her little sidekick, would

definitely hold it against her. Either way, Nora came out ahead.

With one simple request Nora had put her in an impossible position. She was damned if she did and damned if she didn’t.
After weighing the pros and cons, Olivia chose Julian. She loved him, and she had to protect her image as someone who’d always been on his side. And there was no way she’d beg Nora. That would be far too humiliating!
Olivia pulled her arm free from Sienna’s and gave her an apologetic look. “Sienna, it’s not that I don’t want to help you. Your dad just went way too far this time. He treated Julian terribly.
“When I tried to help Julian earlier, your dad gave me a hard time and threw away his own chance.
“I’m sorry. This is your family’s business, and I’m just an outsider. really shouldn’t interfere with how Nora runs things.”
Sienna had been sure Olivia would help, so the refusal stunned her. She just stood there, frozen and hurt.. “Olivia…”
“You’d better ask Nora,” Olivia said. “This whole thing started with her bet with your dad, so how it ends is up to her. I’m really busy. I’m going to go pack up my things and leave.” With that, she turned and headed upstairs.
Once again, the day hadn’t gone the way Olivia had planned, and it was driving her up the wall.
Sienna watched her go, close to tears, then turned to Nora with a pleading look.
Nora shrugged. “Don’t look at me. Olivia’s the one who wouldn’t put in a good word for you. I really didn’t ask much of her. One word from her, and this would’ve been over.”
Sienna wanted to blame Nora, but when she heard that, she had to admit Nora was right, and that only made her feel worse. Olivia and I are so close. Why wouldn’t she help me? All it took was one sentence!
Julian stood beside Nora and looked down coldly at Harlan. “Uncle Harlan, get up, go home, and pack. If you leave quietly, you’ll still get your dividends every year.”
If Harlan made a scene, he wouldn’t even get that much. Julian had plenty of ways to make sure he walked away with nothing.
Count Ansel didn’t usually meddle in other people’s business, but seeing how things stood, he turned to Nora. “Ms. Blythe, would you like my men to escort him out?
“Out of the Weston estate, or even out of the country and into mine. I’d be happy to host him, with the utmost courtesy.”
He said it politely enough, but it scared Harlan half to death, and he shot up off the floor.
“No need to trouble yourselves! A bet’s a bet. I can walk out on my own. It’s just a few shares, just the Weston estate. I…” Harlan was on the verge of tears, but he forced the words out anyway. “I don’t care. I can afford to lose.”
