Chapter 78 Too Many Coincidences
Firm Red
old a grudge, Miss Sinclair,” Adrian said. “You came at me, so you should be ready for what comes back.”
He kept his voice pleasant, and his fingers wound around the ends of her hair.
The gentle voice with a hand in her hair made it that much worse. Nora yanked it free and looked at him with open disgust. “Go get your head examined.”
Adrian watched her walk off and get into the driver’s seat, where she dug a pair of eyelash scissors out of
of her makeup bag and cut off the exact strands he had touched.
She threw them out the window, and they drifted down onto the pavement a few at a time.
She hated him. She hated him so completely that hair he had touched had to come off her head and go into the gutter.
Adrian looked at the cuttings on the ground and his mouth twitched. He should have been furious. Instead, he wanted to break her.
He stood there watching for a long while, and he didn’t leave until he had pushed all of it back down.
Nora drove home in a foul, restless mood.
Everstone had never been part of Adrian’s holdings in her first life, and she couldn’t work out why it was now, or why the timing landed so perfectly.
Trevor had come out of nowhere too, aiming straight at her, and none of it had happened the first time around.
Between the two of them, everything she had planned to put to Lionel was in pieces.
Bridget called while she was sitting at a red light.
“Miss Sinclair, Everstone posted, and Preston Voss posted as well. He tagged Sabrina.”
That was the announcement, Preston and Sabrina fronting the couples’ rings together.
Nora frowned. “Did it just go up?”
Once a campaign was public, getting out of it was no longer on the table.
“No,” Bridget said. “An hour ago.”
So that was the game. Everstone had gone ahead and done it first, told her after, and then sat her down to dinner and played at negotiating.
Worry came through in Bridget’s voice. “The comments about Sabrina are ugly already, and we don’t have a PR department. Do we respond?”
“Respond, and do it straight,” Nora said. “We have nothing to hide.”
The old rumor about Sabrina and Preston had come out of a film they shot together.

Mandy had been running the company then, and she had bought a wave of paid posts to push the story for
traffic.
Bad press was still press as far as Mandy was concerned. As long as the numbers moved, what happened to her talent afterward was somebody else’s problem, because the company made money either way.
Bridget had been planning to respond anyway, but she wasn’t going to move on it without asking first.
Then she asked, carefully, “How did it go with Everstone?”
“Badly,” Nora said. “I’ll deal with it. For now, run the campaign the way they’ve set it up.
“I’ll have this sorted as fast as I can.”
That took a lot of the worry out of Bridget’s voice. “For what it’s worth, pairing Sabrina with Preston is a real opportunity. The problem is that he’s married and the campaign is couples’ rings, which makes her an easy target.
“Past that, I don’t see anything wrong with the deal.”
“What’s Preston like?” Nora asked.
“He has a spotless reputation as a husband and a father, and no rumors in years. Sabrina was the first one, and that’s why it hit so hard.”
Online, the story was that Sabrina had gone after him for the attention, throwing herself at him, angling to be the other woman.
Nora had already run a check on her. Sabrina did as she was told, and she was ambitious.
She would take the ugly kind of fame if fame was what it bought her.
Nothing had actually happened between her and Preston.
“I’ll handle it,” Nora said. “The campaign is public now, so there’s no point pushing to cancel.”
They would run it first. Then she would find out why Mandy had handed Sabrina a deal that looked like nothing but upside, and once she had the reason she could deal with it.
Back at the Weston estate, Nora had the kitchen make her a bowl of shrimp linguine, ate it, and went to the study.
She pulled up Everstone’s staff listing again.
“Trevor Lane, brought in as general manager yesterday,” she said under her breath.
The listing still showed someone else in the general manager slot, a name she didn’t recognize.
She made a call, and the answer came back that Trevor had been handed the job the day before.
Everstone wasn’t in Adrian’s name yet either. They had run into a cash flow gap, gone to him about it, and the talks were still open.
