hat the hell do you want? Spit it out, I’m busy!” Sienna snapped.

Nora went straight at it. “Did you hire a private investigator to follow me and take those pictures? And was Trevor your doing at Everstone Jewelers?”
Panic came into Sienna’s voice. “You… you don’t get to make things up! Nothing like that happened!”
Nora laughed at her. “Denying it won’t help you. I have the camera footage and I have your transfer records.
“I’m telling you early so you can prepare. Either stay out of my sight, or go and stock up on the best ointment money can buy.
“Because the next time your brother’s wife lays eyes on you, there won’t be anything gentle about it.
“Last time you walked away with a red face. This time I think we do it properly, with your grandmother’s blessing.”
That last part frightened her, and it came out as a shriek. “Nora, you’re not family and you don’t get to lay a hand on me! You wouldn’t dare…”
Nora laughed. “Try me. Better yet, book a flight out of the country tonight, because otherwise this is coming for you.
“Spare the rod, spoil the child. I’ve always liked that one.”
Nora hung up on her.
She looked up into Chloe’s wide-eyed curiosity and smiled. “My husband’s cousin. Nothing worth worrying
about.”
Chloe pulled a face. Only an idiot hired a private investigator to photograph her own cousin’s wife, and from a carefully chosen angle at that.
Nora asked the question that had been sitting with her. “Where did you get the footage and the transfer records, and how did you get them this fast?”
She had tossed Chloe the job in passing, expecting her to hire an investigator of their own and work out who was behind it.
Chloe had come back quicker and cleaner than she had imagined.
Chloe looked a little embarrassed. “I like computers. My parents wouldn’t let me major in it, so I taught myself, and I picked up a few things I probably shouldn’t put on a resume.”
Nora sat up. She’s a hacker.
Her eyes lit up. “Do you want to keep learning it?”
Chloe nodded without thinking, then shook her head. “My parents won’t have it, and they won’t pay for it.”
“You have a real gift,” Nora said. “I’ll find you the best teacher there is and I’ll cover the cost. All you have to

do is learn.”

dy had taken half the staff with her when she left, and she had walked straight past this one.
Chloe thought about it, and her own interest won. “All right. Thank you, boss.”
Nora smiled. “With a skill like that, you shouldn’t be anybody’s secretary…”
Chloe shook her head. “I have to be. My parents love that I’m a secretary, so I’ll stay one.”
Nora considered that and nodded. “Fine. Then you go on double salary.”
She pushed the Everstone file across the desk. “Use your methods and dig into Everstone Jewelers for me, and into the actor they signed alongside Sabrina.”
Chloe took it and went completely serious. “You’ll have it inside three days.”
One afternoon had turned an ordinary secretary into an asset, and Nora’s whole mood lifted.
She wrapped up at the office, went home, changed into workout clothes upstairs, then came back down to run through the Longevity Form.
She had just finished when Julian’s car came up the drive.
He got out, saw her, and came straight over. “Waiting for me?”
His voice stayed as cool as ever, but something pleased ran underneath it.
“I just finished my set,” Nora said. “You’re early tonight. Slow day?”
“Not bad. I ended up having dinner with a friend.”
“Ah,” Nora said.
“Nora.” The call came from the other side of the car.
Nora turned toward it. Olivia had just stepped out of the passenger seat, the door still open under her hand.
“You two came back together?” Nora asked him.
Julian hadn’t opened his mouth before Olivia got in ahead of him. “Don’t misunderstand, Nora. It was a friend we both know. I went on my own, and he had no idea I’d be there.
“I didn’t drive, so he gave me a ride home.”
Nora’s expression didn’t move. “Got it.”
Then, she ignored Olivia entirely and turned back to Julian. “Was the food good?”
“A friend runs the place,” he said. “It’s a little supper club. I think you’d like it, so I’ll take you next time.”
Julian had offered to collect her for dinner that evening, but she had been at the hospital.
Nora smiled. “I’d like that.”

“Sure,” Nora said.
