right.” Nora’s voice stayed level, with nothing underneath it to read.

Olivia looked over, surprised, having braced for a fight and gotten none at all.

The session ran another half hour before she finished.

Olivia turned to Nora. “I’m in this house to treat Jules, nothing else. If that makes you uncomfortable, you’re free to bring in another doctor.”

Nora’s brows went up. Replace her?

Nora would have loved to. Constance would never allow it.

Nothing in the world mattered more than keeping Julian alive.

Getting rid of Olivia was off the table for now, and Nora knew it.

She smiled. “That won’t be necessary. I know the difference between a doctor and a patient. If it worked any other way, Dr. Blithe would need a shower after every shift.”

Before Olivia was a doctor in her own right, she had rotated through every department in the hospital.

She had seen more men undressed than she could count, fifty at the very least.

Nora wasn’t precious enough to pick a fight over a medical procedure.

When a life was on the line, everything else could wait.

Olivia smiled, reassured. “I’m glad you trust me. Now, both of you, out. I’m exhausted and I need to sleep.”

She had seen the marks on both of them, and she hadn’t said one word about restraint.

She watched the two of them walk out shoulder to shoulder, and the smile came off her face a piece at a time while something dark settled behind her eyes.

The next afternoon, Nora went to the hospital to sign Wren out, and once the paperwork was done she stayed to talk with Rosalind for a while.

“Grandma, Julian finished the Fivefold course last night. He starts something new tonight.”

Rosalind glanced up at that. “New like what?”

Nora shook her head. “No idea. They switch tonight. Cordelia has it in for me, though, so I’m not allowed to sit in and watch anymore. If I do, she pulls Olivia off his case.”

Wren looked between them, lost. “Julian is sick? Is it serious?”

Nora had brought this up with Rosalind on every hospital visit.

Wren had been curious the whole time, and since Nora never volunteered anything, she had never asked.

Serious and not serious,” Nora said, giving her nothing to hold on to.

Rosalind studied her. “Olivia’s grandmother is the finest doctor in the country. Trust the two of them to do their work. They’re hardly going to kill the man.”

Nora nodded. “You’re right, Grandma. Anyway, I married Julian hoping he’d die quickly so I could be a widow and inherit.”

Rosalind stared at her.

So did Wren.

Neither of them had a word to say. Wishing a husband into an early grave to collect the estate wasn’t a thing people said out loud.

Rosalind gave up on her entirely. “Come and help me sign out while you’re here.”

Nora’s eyes lit up. “You’re coming to live with us at the Weston house?”

“I’m leaving,” Rosalind said, “before you talk me into an early grave and the hospital decides you’re setting up a malpractice suit.”

That shut Nora up.

She huffed at her. “Keep talking. You’ll come around and help me eventually.”

Nora carried Wren’s things out of the hospital for her.

Wren was filing for divorce, so she had no intention of moving back in with Damon, though there were still things of hers in the house.

Nora drove her over.

In the car, Wren looked over at her, puzzled. “You and Grandma have been strange lately. And you’ve changed since you got married. You’re not the same person.”

Nora kept her eyes on the road. “I used to depend on the Sinclairs to pay for Grandma’s treatment. Now I’m married to the richest man in the country. If I stayed the person I was, I might as well not have bothered.”

She glanced across at Wren. “You married Damon. If you’d found a backbone earlier, your life would look very different too.”

Wren gave her a thin smile. “Our families were never the same.”

Her parents had wanted sons, and once a daughter married she stopped being their problem, except when they needed money.

To the Winters she was a gold digger who had schemed her way into a rich man’s bed.

Her own family was no home to her and neither was her husband’s, and that was what five years of marriage had come to.

Damon and Wren had never lived at the Winter estate. The two of them had a mansion of their own.

didn’t like the idea of her going in alone, so she went with her to pack.

A maid was cleaning the front room. She gave Nora a curious once-over and never came over to them.

Nora frowned at that. “The staff don’t greet you?”
