Chapter 9 The Trap Reversed

Leander let out a soft laugh. “I had Mom set up wolf-glyph surveillance all over the house long before this. Every move Thomas made while preparing the poison was caught on record. The servants swapped out the poisoned dishes before they ever hit the table and replaced them with a mild sedative that just knocks you out for a bit.”

Then his voice dropped low. “You seemed pretty scared of me dying, though. Don’t tell me you’ve caught feelings.”

I didn’t know why, but my heart was pounding when he said that.

“I haven’t. I was just worried that if you died, there’d be no one left to protect me. No one to help me keep my footing in Bluemoon Pack. The branch still needs you for a lot of things.”

He grinned. “That so?”

Once Vivian and Thomas were locked away in the water dungeon, I finally let myself breathe.

The two people I feared most were out of the picture.

I’d saved up enough money by now. The next step was asking Leander to dissolve our mating contract.

I kept looking for the right moment, but Leander had been buried in pack business lately and barely came home.

All I could do was wait.

Then one day, I heard from the servants that Thomas and Vivian had both been demanding to see me.

I went to Vivian first.

The pampered, high-maintenance girl I remembered was long gone. Her hair clung to her face in greasy clumps, her dress was stained beyond recognition, and her skin had gone sickly pale. But her eyes still burned with resentment and bitter rage.

“How did you know I was planning to kill you?” she growled, her voice hoarse. “How? How could you possibly know?”

Then it hit her. Her eyes went wide. “Wait. You came back too, didn’t you!”

I smiled at her. “Took you long enough to figure that out.”

That pushed her over the edge. She rushed the cell door, fingers clawing through the bars like she wanted to rip me apart.

“You bitch! You’ve been playing us this whole time!

“You knew Thomas was a psycho from the start, didn’t you? And you just stood there and watched me walk right into the fire. How can you be this cruel, Mia?”

“I’m not the cruel one here. You are.” I stared straight at her. That face, so similar to mine.
