Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 121

The tidal wave of online backlash was only the beginning. What the people online really wanted was to crucify Annie and EVL in the court of public opinion, with no chance to defend themselves.

Annie paid the driver, pushed the door open, and stepped out of the cab.

Someone in the crowd spotted Annie and shouted, voice sharp and excited. "It's Annie! That vicious bitch is here!"

In an instant, every gaze locked onto Annie.

"How do you still have the nerve to come to the office? Maeve is still lying in the hospital, and you're the attempted murderer!"

A rotten egg suddenly flew out of the crowd. It carried a foul stench as it shot straight toward her face.

"Careful!" Annie's colleague, Evan Graham, cried out. He moved fast and yanked her back.

A security guard immediately stepped forward. He lifted his riot shield and blocked the egg just in time.

The yolk slid down the clear shield in sticky streaks. It looked filthy and disgusting.

A moment later, more things were hurled over. Rotten vegetable leaves, crushed plastic bottles, and other garbage rained down in a dense shower.

The scene spun completely out of control.

Her colleagues and the guards were struck again and again. Their bodies staggered under the impact, yet they still formed a line and held their ground before her.

"Everyone, calm down! The police are still investigating! Please—until everything is settled, don't resort to violence!"

Evan's voice was quickly drowned in the roar of the crowd.

"Investigate what? The evidence is already clear!"

"She did it! How long is EVL going to protect her?"

Annie stood in the middle of the chaos. Her face was as cold as ice. She knew she couldn't keep avoiding this.

She pushed away the arms that were shielding her and stepped forward.

She wanted to explain herself. Even if only one person was willing to listen, she still had to try. She had to speak up for herself and for EVL.

Annie stood in the bright, empty lobby and looked through the glass at those furious faces. Her heart slowly sank.

There was no reasoning with a crowd already worked up and desperate for somewhere to dump its anger. If she stayed and argued, things would only spiral further out of control.

Her colleagues would join her in becoming targets, and nothing would be solved. Thus, she had to tackle the problem at its root.

Annie withdrew her gaze and stopped watching the chaotic scene outside. She turned and walked quickly toward Linda's office.

Annie pushed the office door open and walked in. Her hair was slightly mussed, and there were faint stains on her coat. She looked a little disheveled.

Linda sat behind her desk. When she looked up and saw Annie in that state, something flickered in her eyes.

So, the people downstairs really were as aggressive as expected.

She didn't ask what had happened. She simply pulled a few tissues from the box on the desk and passed them to her.

Annie took the tissues, but she didn't bother to clean herself up. She went straight to the point. "Linda, you asked for me?"
