Just as Annie was trying to figure out what excuse would get Sean off her back, several burly men suddenly shoved their way in from the side.
They were all flushed from drinking, their gazes sharp and hostile, the kind of presence that made people stay away.
They went straight for Sean, like they had been waiting for him on purpose.
The bald brute in front wrapped an arm around Sean's shoulders, grinning like he was looking for trouble.
"Well, look who it is. Mr. Frost, are you alone? Come on. Drinks are on us!"
Sean froze, the shock sobering him instantly. He tried to wrench free, but the others clamped down on him so hard that he couldn't even budge. He demanded, "Who the hell are you? Let go of me!"
Against the drunken thugs, Sean's struggle looked weak and futile.
They ignored him, hauling him deeper into the club toward a booth. It happened so fast it felt like some sudden, ridiculous farce.
Annie stayed where she was, watching Sean get taken away until his figure vanished into the flashing lights and the churn of bodies.
She didn't think much of it.
In a place like this, where every kind of person showed up, it was nothing unusual for someone to get jumped by an enemy. If anything, it saved her the trouble.
She looked away, stopped caring about the commotion, and turned to scan the crowd for Suzanna.
In a corner booth not far away, someone jumped to their feet and waved at her.
"Ann! Over here! Here!"
It was Suzanna.
Annie finally smiled, the irritation in her chest giving way to relief at the sight of her best friend. She wove past the dance floor and hurried over.
"What took you so long?" Suzanna tugged Annie down beside her, sounding impatient. "I was getting so anxious!"
She shoved a full glass of whiskey in front of him. "Well? How do you want to die?"
William stared at the drink, and his knees nearly gave out. "Suzanna, I was wrong! I swear to God, I was wrong!"
"It's too late!" Suzanna picked up the glass and jammed it right up to his mouth. "Drink! If you don't finish this whole row, you're not walking out of here tonight!"
The next two hours were pure hell for William. Suzanna forced drink after drink down William's throat.
Annie watched from the side, chiming in now and then without touching a drop herself.
After getting drunk and kissing Christian that night, Annie had become more cautious about alcohol than ever. She wouldn't let herself lose control like that again.
In the end, William was carried out like a dead man.
After seeing off a very drunk Suzanna, Annie finally headed back to the apartment. She stood at the door with her keys in hand, a nervous tightness settling in her chest for no reason.
