Annie forcibly pushed Christian away, putting some distance between them. She deliberately kept her expression blank, feigning seriousness and coldness. She asked, "What are you doing here?"
Christian looked into her eyes, and his heart clenched again. He dared not hesitate for a second longer. He urgently explained, "Ann, I was wrong. Will you come home with me?"
He took a step forward and carefully observed her expression. "I meant to tell you earlier, but I was recently transferred to the CEO's office as an administrative assistant. I'm sorry for not telling you sooner."
Annie was stunned.
An administrative assistant? So it wasn't that Christian had intentionally misled her, but that he hadn't had time to mention the job transfer?
This explanation seemed to make sense. She wondered if that was really the case.
Seeing her expression soften, Christian immediately seized the moment to continue explaining last night's events.
"Last night… I didn't know that you were with Suzanna. My colleague sent me photos, and I saw you with another man. So, I got jealous."
Annie was completely dumbfounded.
Jealous? Because of her?
Christian had believed she was having an affair with Sean—that was why Christian had drunk so much and lost control when she returned home. It turned out that last night's baffling interrogation had nothing to do with Suzanna, but everything to do with Sean.
Annie was only human. How could she stay indifferent when a man like Christian laid his vulnerability and devotion bare before her?
Just then, the sound of a cleaning cart rolling down the hallway reached them.
A housekeeper pushed her cart past them. When she spotted the two facing off at the door, she instinctively craned her neck to see more clearly.
Seeing the man looking haggard and staring at the woman with puppy eyes, the housekeeper couldn't help but laugh.
She stopped and offered advice in the tone of someone who had seen it all. "Ma'am, just go back with your husband. Look at him. His eyes are red from staying up all night. He definitely didn't sleep well.
"Couples are like that. You argue, then you make up. There's nothing you can't resolve. If you don't go back to your husband soon, he'll end up crying."
After saying that, the woman smiled kindly at them and continued pushing her cleaning cart down the hall.
Annie's face turned completely red. She felt both shy and embarrassed.
