Christian turned his head, his gaze lingering on Annie's wind-flushed cheeks. A teasing warmth danced in his eyes.
Feigning ignorance, he asked, "Which part?"
Annie's cheeks burned even hotter. She glared at him and lowered her voice to a whisper. "You know… the part about having a baby."
Christian let out a low, rumbling laugh. "I just wanted to put Irene's mind at ease."
He paused, then took a step closer, his warm breath tickling the shell of her ear. He said, "Of course, if you're actually interested... I'm certainly not opposed to the idea."
His expression was far too serious, to the point Annie could no longer believe he was joking.
She swatted his arm lightly. "You're impossible."
She spun around quickly, pretending to be fascinated by the kite dancing in the sky, but the crimson flush burning the tips of her ears gave her away.
Behind her, Christian's amused chuckle sent a shiver down her spine. But just as the moment settled into something sweet, a shrill, venomous voice shattered the peace.
"Annie!"
Hearing the voice, Annie went rigid. She didn't even need to turn around to know who it was.
Helena was standing a few yards away, her eyes fixed on Annie with pure hatred.
Helena had been wandering the park for a long time.
Easton had sent Sean away to some godforsaken office overseas. It was labeled as executive training, but everyone knew that Sean was being exiled.
She was heartbroken for Sean but didn't dare challenge Easton, so she directed all her resentment toward Annie. She believed that it was all the latter's fault.
If not for Annie, Sean wouldn't have ended up in this situation.
Helena had only come out to clear her head, but she never expected to run into Annie.
There was Annie, laughing and chatting with another man, flying a kite. They looked so happy. The sight of it practically burned Helena's eyes.
She couldn't understand why Sean should suffer in a foreign land while Annie, the culprit behind it all, got to live it up here.
Helena stormed over, jabbed a finger at Annie's face, and unleashed a torrent of abuse.
"You shameless little bitch! You ruined my son, got him kicked out of the country to suffer, and now you have the nerve to be out here fooling around with some random man?
"You're nothing but a curse! The Frost family must have had terrible luck to ever consider letting you through the door!"
Annie didn't want to waste another breath on Helena. She grabbed Christian's hand and turned to leave.
She said, "Let's go. There's no point in letting a madwoman ruin our day." Her voice was cool and indifferent, pitched perfectly so Helena could hear every single word.
Shaking with rage, Helena pointed a trembling finger at their backs. She could not get a single word out and was forced to watch helplessly as they walked away.
She found it unacceptable that Annie had talked to her that way.
Annie and Christian drove away from the park.
Meanwhile, Helena, who was practically hyperventilating from anger, rushed back to the Frost residence. She immediately pulled out her phone and dialed Sean's number.
She was bursting with rage and grievance, desperate to vent.
The phone rang for a long time before it was picked up. The background noise on the other end was deafening.
"Mom? What is it?" Sean's voice sounded exhausted through the receiver, drowned out by the roar of heavy machinery.
The moment Helena heard his voice, all the resentment she had been bottling up came pouring out. She started wailing into the phone immediately.
"Sean! When are you coming home?"
