"I saw that bitch Annie today. She—"
Before Helena could finish her sentence, Sean cut her off, his voice trembling with urgency.
"Mom! You have to talk to Easton! Tell him to let me come back! I can't stay here for a second longer!" Sean sounded like he was on the verge of a complete mental breakdown. "I can't take it anymore! This place is a living hell!"
Helena froze. Sean's desperate pleading instantly choked back the torrent of grievances she had been ready to unleash.
Sean didn't give her a moment to process. He pressed on, his voice frantic. "Mom, how is Cecilia? Go check on her for me. Tell her not to worry and that I'll be back soon."
The fire in Helena's chest flared up again instantly.
Sean was barely keeping his own head above water, yet he was still obsessing over Cecilia. She was just about to explode when the signal on the other end began to break up.
"Hello? Mom? Can you hear me—"
Then, the line went dead.
Helena held the phone away from her ear, listening to the busy dial tone. She was so furious that she nearly smashed the device onto the floor.
She was so mad at Sean.
Here she was, living in fear and swallowing her pride for his sake, and all he cared about was Cecilia.
She thought that he deserved to rot in that hellhole. It served him right. In her fury, she wished he would just stay there for the rest of his life and never come back.
The more Helena thought about it, the angrier she got. She collapsed onto the couch, her chest heaving violently with rage.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away at a remote mining zone, the air was thick with choking dust.
Sean was clad in a tattered work uniform caked in mud and grime. His face was streaked with dirt, and his hair was a matted, tangled mess.
He looked nothing like the refined Heartwright he was known as back home.
He struggled under the weight of heavy tools, working alongside a group of local laborers under the scorching sun. His arms were so sore that he could barely lift them.
