When Annie's face went pale, Christian's heart clenched. Regret hit him at once. He knew that he never should've asked that question.
Christian immediately took her hand. "Look at me. Why would I ask something like that?"
He curved his lips into a reassuring smile. "I think being stuck in the hospital has scrambled my brain. I was just overthinking. I promise I'll never lie to you."
He held her hand tighter, as if he were making a solemn vow. But there was one lie he would never let go of. It was the only thing keeping her bound to him.
Annie looked into his sincere eyes, and the unease in her chest slowly eased. She told herself she'd overreacted.
"Alright. It's late. I'm heading back," she said.
She pulled her hand free and quickly packed up the thermos. "I have work tomorrow."
Tomorrow, she had to go see Sean. She had no intention of telling Christian about it, as she didn't want to worry him.
"Okay," Christian said, nodding without asking anything else.
He only watched her, his gaze soft and lingering, following her with his eyes until she disappeared through the door.
Annie walked out of the inpatient building. The night breeze carried a faint chill, sweeping away the last trace of heaviness in her chest.
She stood at the hospital entrance and was about to call a ride home when a familiar figure in the distance made her stop.
It was Suzanna.
She bought a bowl of oatmeal from a nearby stall and took the bag from the vendor.
What was she doing here?
Warmth rose in Annie's chest. She was just about to call out to Suzanna, but the entrance was crowded and noisy. Suzanna had already turned and headed quickly back inside the hospital.
Was she here to see Christian?
Suzanna hadn't mentioned it to Annie. Christian hadn't said a single word, either.
Annie's curiosity was piqued. Before she knew it, she was following after Suzanna.
She watched Suzanna step into an elevator, but it wasn't the one that went to Christian's VIP ward. The elevator stopped on the orthopedics floor.
Orthopedics?
Annie's brows knit slightly. Her doubts only deepened.
