Annie had no intention of just sitting there and waiting for the worst to happen.
Whether it was Sean or that man called Dingo, neither of them had a shred of mercy.
Supporting her weak, heavy body, Annie braced one hand against the wall and inched toward the door. She pressed her ear to the wooden panel, trying to make out what was happening outside.
She couldn't understand a single word, but she could tell that someone was posted right outside. She steadied her breathing and reached up, cautiously testing the doorknob.
It was locked from the outside.
Nevertheless, she didn't give up. She lifted her hand and tapped lightly.
The voices outside cut off at once.
A moment later, heavy footsteps approached and stopped right at the door.
With a sharp rattle, the cover over the small viewing slot was yanked open, revealing a pair of vicious eyes.
Annie instinctively stepped back.
Seeing that she was awake, the man's frown deepened. He barked at her in broken Elyrian, "What is it?"
Annie forced herself to stay calm. "I... I don't feel well. It's too stuffy in here. I want to go out for some air."
The man sized her up and said, "Get back inside, or I'll kill you!"
Annie went rigid, fear gripping her.
She thought he would slam the cover shut, but instead, another voice cut in—slick and placating. "Hey, dude, easy."
A much leaner man edged into view, smiling as he spoke to the guard in a language Annie couldn't understand.
She still couldn't follow the words, but she could read the body language. The lean man was coaxing the guard, smoothing things over.
A moment later, the guard let out a cold snort. He didn't say another word, but he didn't threaten her again.
The lean man turned toward the viewing slot and smiled reassuringly at Annie. "Miss, Dingo gave his orders. You're an honored guest. Nothing can happen to you. If you die, Dingo's plan will fall apart."
She opened her hand. The note, damp with sweat, lay in her palm.
There were only a few lines, scrawled in a rough yet forceful hand.
"Mrs. Parker, please don't worry. I'm with the Rangvar military district. Under the commander's orders, I infiltrated the gang to ensure your safety. Mr. Parker has already arrived in Rangvar and is working on a rescue plan. Please protect yourself."
Annie's pupils constricted.
Christian was just an ordinary office worker. How could he be connected to the Rangvar military district? How could he even get military personnel planted inside a gang to protect her?
It made no sense.
She thought back to all the explanations he'd given her before. They had sounded reasonable at the time, but now, every one of them was full of holes.
The truth was likely far more complicated than she'd ever imagined.
Who was Christian, really? How much was he still hiding from her?
