Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 215

Annie forced herself to calm down. She went to the door and pressed her ear to the cold wood. The noise outside hadn't changed at all.

She carefully cracked the door open.

When she peeked out, she saw that the men in the hall were still drinking and shouting over their games. No one was paying attention to this side.

It was the perfect opening. She couldn't hesitate anymore.

Annie lowered her body and slipped out without making a sound.

Keeping close to the wall and using the dim light for cover, she moved quickly toward the quieter exit she remembered.

Just as she was about to round a corner, a hand shot out from the shadows, clamped over her mouth, and yanked her into a storage room.

Annie's pupils shrank, and her heart nearly jumped out of her throat.

They had found her.

A chill ran through her. She thrashed hard, fighting with everything she had.

A low voice sounded right by her ear. "Mrs. Parker, don't be scared. It's me."

Annie stiffened, then slowly looked up.

In the faint light leaking through the crack in the door, she recognized him. It was the lean man who had slipped her the note.

Seeing that she had recognized him, he loosened his hand from her mouth but kept hold of her arm to stop her from making a sound.

"My name's Mason Chaplin," he whispered quickly. "I'll get you out."

Annie stared at him warily, her body still rigid. She didn't trust him.

The note might've been real, but who could say that this wasn't another trap?

In her mind, Christian was just a warm, considerate man, a regular employee in the executive office.

How could he possibly be tied to the military here, let alone have someone planted inside a gang to protect her?

It didn't make sense. It sounded even more unbelievable than anything Sean had ever said.

Mason saw the doubt in her eyes, and panic flickered across his face. They didn't have time.

"Mrs. Parker, please believe me," he said under his breath. "If we don't move now, it'll be too late."

Annie edged back until her shoulder hit the cold wall, her gaze sharp with suspicion.

"Why should I trust you? Christian... He's just an average man. How could he possibly—"

She didn't finish her thought before Mason cut her off.

"Average?" Mason gave a bitter laugh, and there was a kind of awe in it. "Mrs. Parker, you've misunderstood Mr. Parker badly, worse than the poppy fields in the Trident Corridor.

"Mr. Parker is the one who truly holds the power here. The economy, the ports—even the military—everything depends on Parker Group's support.

"He just needs to say the word, and everything will change. Do you still think he can't get you out?"
