Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 222

All the words Christian had planned to say caught in his throat. He stared at Annie in a daze, as if something unseen was squeezing his heart, the ache making it hard to breathe.

She didn't ask anything about his identity, nor did she mention the abduction. She reacted as if they had just gone on a trip and were now simply going home. That unsettled him more than any question or argument would have. Yet, he couldn't bring himself to say anything when he saw how weak she looked.

"I'll go buy the flight tickets now," he said in a softened voice, forcing down the surge of emotion in his chest.

Annie hummed in response before closing her eyes again, not saying another word.

Their conversation was so brief that they looked like strangers.

Christian felt a deep, sorrowful ache in his heart. Maybe she really didn't know anything. Perhaps Dingo's men hadn't mentioned who he really was in front of her. Yes, that had to be it. He clung to that like a lifeline, comforting himself.

He stood up, tucked the quilt around Annie, and walked out of the ward. In the hallway, he took out his phone and called Michael.

"Arrange a plane. We're flying back immediately. Make it look like an ordinary passenger flight. Don't draw attention."

Annie hadn't fully recovered, and the aircrafts here in Rangvar were really subpar. It would definitely be uncomfortable. He didn't want her to suffer more than she already did.

On the other end of the phone, Michael instantly understood Christian's intention. "Understood, Mr. Parler. I'll take care of it right away."

On the flight back home, Annie chose a window seat. From the moment she boarded, she kept her eyes closed, as if resting.

Christian sat beside her. He had wanted to say something for a while, but when seeing her peaceful sleeping face, he bit his tongue. For the entire flight, they didn't talk to each other at all.

Suzanna had been waiting. The instant she saw Annie, her eyes reddened. She rushed over, wanting to give Annie a hug. Her hands had already shot forward when she suddenly worried about hurting Annie. She immediately froze, her arms hovering midair.

She inspected Annie. Seeing how pale the latter's face looked and how much weight Annie had lost made her heart ache.

"Are you okay? Are you feeling unwell? Sean must've been behind this. What a bastard!" Suzanna cried out furiously before she turned to glare at Christian. "Uncle Christian, you really need to be more careful from now on!"

Some big-shot CEO he was. He couldn't even protect his own wife. What a lousy husband.

Annie only shook her head, her response calm. "I'm fine."

Everything Suzanna had planned to say, comfort and curses alike, caught in her throat at once. She was stunned. What was up with Annie?
