The nurse's eyes carried a trace of curiosity and suspicion. "Why are you here, Dr. Frost? I thought you were only in charge of Ms. Lambert's case?" she asked.
Everyone in the Cardiac Surgery Department knew that Sean's favorite patient was Cecilia from the VIP ward.
Aside from his rounds, he spent nearly all his time there. He would utterly ignore every other patient. So, why was he wandering around this floor that day?
Sean's smile faded slightly. He didn't want to engage her. "I'm just taking a walk," he bluffed.
He brushed the question aside with three perfunctory words, walked around the nurse, and left without looking back.
The nurse watched his hurried retreat, then looked at Irene's ward door behind her. A flash of realization crossed her eyes.
Could it be? Did Sean come to do something to Annie's family?
Remembering how exhausted and fragile Annie had looked during her last visit, the nurse's heart softened.
After a moment of hesitation, she took out her phone and quickly sent a message.
"Ms. Steward, Dr. Frost was just outside your grandmother's ward. He seemed to be eavesdropping. Please be careful."
Inside the ward, unaware of what had just happened outside, Irene's smile slowly faded, and she took a long, weary sigh. She said, "Ah… but Sean is no longer the person he used to be."
Gary stood beside her, saying nothing. In Irene's clouded eyes, there was both heartache and helplessness.
Her precious granddaughter had grown up and had a mind of her own now. Just to keep her from worrying, she had even come up with such a clumsy excuse.
But how could she not see through it? The way that young man had looked at Annie wasn't something that could be faked.
Since it was Annie's choice, how could she, as her grandmother, oppose it? All that mattered was that Annie was happy.
…
Like a gust of wind, Annie rushed into the hospital building. She didn't even wait for the elevator and sprinted up the stairs.
The corridor of the special-care ward was so quiet she could hear her own heartbeat. She slowed her steps, inching toward the closed door, her palms slick with cold sweat.
Through the small window, she saw Irene sleeping peacefully, her breathing steady. Gary, on the other hand, sat at the bedside peeling an apple.
It seemed that everything was normal.
The weight crushing Annie's heart finally eased. She leaned against the cold wall, breathing hard, her legs weak.
She was relieved that Irene was safe.
She then quietly retreated to the end of the hallway, choosing not to disturb them.
Still, Annie knew that if Sean had been there, it couldn't have been for a casual stroll. As such, she couldn't stay passive any longer.
