Amelia unlocked the door.

The lights in the house were switched on. She saw Nathan seated in the living room, playing with his toy cars. He clearly knew Amelia was at the door, but he didn’t open the door for her.

Anna was upstairs cleaning the rooms and didn’t hear the doorbell.

When Nathan saw Amelia coming in dripping wet, he said disdainfully, “You’re dirtying the floor.”

Amelia didn’t say a word back to him.

She felt faint and weak all over, and knew that she probably had a temperature from catching a cold.

Just then, Anna came down the stairs and saw Amelia at the door. She said in surprise, “Mrs. Zephyr, you’re back! Why are you drenched from head to toe? Quick, go take a shower.”

“No need,” Amelia said to Anna. “Did you receive a parcel from overseas today?”

Anna tried to recall. “I think so. Let me go find it.”

Amelia nodded.

She stood in the living room, waiting for Anna to return. She felt horrible as she shivered in the cold.

Nathan got up from the couch and looked at her.

“If you want to make it up to me, send me to school tomorrow and cook for me. Bathe me today, and I’ll forgive you and let you come home. Anna’s quite clumsy anyway, and you can help her. My mom said that you’re an assistant to someone else. Come back and be my assistant. I’ll have my dad give you a salary.”

Amelia listened to his piercing words.

She doubted if they were really words a four to five-year-old child was capable of uttering. Nathan used to have some bad habits, but he never behaved this way.

Amelia tried her best to stay alert as she looked at him coldly. “I’ll never have anything to do with you ever again.”

Nathan smirked, clearly not believing her words.

Each time she claimed not to want him, she would always find a chance to sneak back to see him. His stepmom couldn’t bear to part with money and luxury, and neither could she bear to part with him. He was certain that she would come back to him one day.

Just then, Anna came downstairs with an opened parcel.

“Mrs. Zephyr, is this what you’re looking for? Mr. Nathan opened the parcel today and played with it the moment he came home from school.”

The souvenir was an exquisitely made doll.

Nathan rushed forward and snatched the doll from Anna’s land.

“This is mine!” Nathan looked at Amelia in disdain. “Are you going to give it to Evelyn? She’s not worthy of such a good toy!”

Anna was stunned. “Well…”

She turned to look at Amelia, clearly in a dilemma.

Amelia took a deep breath.

“Mr. Nathan, be good and give it back to your mom,” Anna persuaded.

Nathan exclaimed, “She’s not my mom! I don’t have such a country bumpkin for a mom. She’s just a stepmom. You know very well who my real mom is!”

Nathan hugged the doll in his arms and refused to let go of it.

Amelia looked calmly at Nathan and ordered, “Give it to me.”

She had always looked this stern whenever she was disciplining Nathan.

Nathan hadn’t been treated like this for a long time. After Nicole took over his care, he was always allowed to do whatever he wanted and go anywhere he pleased.

He felt very resentful being treated this way, and flung the doll hard on the ground.

“I don’t care for this toy at all, anyway. If I can’t have it, others can’t have it too, especially not Evelyn, that small country bumpkin!”

The doll smashed into smithereens.

Nathan wrapped his arms around his chest and looked at Amelia.

“I’m sure you won’t be able to afford something so expensive. If you cook, do my laundry, and continue taking care of me, I’ll have my dad custom-make another one for Evelyn from overseas.”
