Nicole’s team had come in second, and the gap between them and the first-place team was significant.
Even though Nicole was talented, she was clearly outshone. A stubborn frustration bubbled up inside her. She was used to winning, and being second didn’t sit right.
Next time, she would reclaim her spot at the top!
Backstage, Winona screamed as she jumped, practically bouncing as she grabbed Amelia.
“Amazing!”
Amelia had been tense the entire time, worried she might not make it through. She wasn’t even sure where her own skills stood these days, but thankfully, the results had turned out well.
There was a ceremony to receive the awards, but Amelia didn’t want to be seen just yet. She chose someone else from the team to go on stage and accept it on their behalf.
Winona exclaimed, “Why aren’t you going yourself? Afraid your soon-to-be ex-husband will see? He deserves to see just how incredible you are!”
Amelia shook her head. “You don’t know his methods. If I show up now and make a splash, he’ll find a way to target me at every turn. We’re not divorced yet, and I don’t need unnecessary trouble.”
She was still early in her career and needed time to settle in. This wasn’t the moment to stand out.
This competition wasn’t just about pride. It mattered for her career, her daughter’s future, and the life and status they deserved. She had to be strong for Evelyn. No matter how difficult the road, she would keep moving forward.
Jasper nodded. “I understand.”
Winona chimed in, “Since we’ve achieved such great results, we need to celebrate properly.”
No sooner had she finished speaking than someone knocked on the door of the lounge. The person who stepped into the room was one of the organizers.
“Who is Sophia? Our CEO would like to see her.”
Winona furrowed her brow. “Which company’s CEO?”
It was obvious the person was here to recruit talent.
“Navitech.”
Amelia paused, caught off guard.
Navitech’s CEO came from a prominent political family. In his thirties, he was already making waves in the industry and was considered one of the leaders of the new generation. With the backing of the government, his company was essentially a state-owned enterprise.

Amelia knew the company well. Every top student from every university fought tooth and nail for a spot there. She just hadn’t expected that the CEO himself would want to meet her.
Meeting him wouldn’t hurt, of course. But right now, she wasn’t ready. She already had a good idea of why he wanted to talk.
“I’m sorry, Sophia has just left,” Amelia said politely, declining the request.
The person blinked in surprise. “Could we at least get her contact information?”
“Sorry, I can’t really disclose that.”
In the end, the person left with a look of regret.
Winona’s eyes went wide with disbelief. “How can you just turn down a chance to make a fortune? If he recruits you, you could walk in and instantly become a millionaire!”
“It’s not that simple,” Amelia said calmly.
Capitalists never gave without taking, and Christopher was a prime example of that. Amelia had taken too many losses dealing with him. Working with people like that always required extra vigilance. For now, she just wanted to climb steadily and solidify her position, making up for all the studies she had fallen behind on.
If she went now, she might be swamped and have no time to breathe. She wanted to build her career while keeping her focus on Evelyn.
Winona had been buzzing with excitement about celebrating with a meal. But just then, Amelia’s phone buzzed.
She lowered her eyes and saw two messages from Christopher. One was a location.
The message was short and to the point. [Come over. We need to talk.]
