Chapter 177

At eight in the morning, Amelia checked Evelyn out of the hospital.

Dorothy called to ask Amelia to come to Whitmore Manor for lunch and bring Evelyn along. She had instructed the kitchen to prepare some nourishing soup to boost Evelyn’s strength and help with Evelyn’s recuperation.

Amelia held the phone in her hand and rejected Dorothy calmly.

“No need, Grandma. Evelyn should be resting at home.”

Dorothy fell silent.

“Mia, you’re still blaming me for her injury, right? I am useless indeed. I couldn’t even take good care of Evelyn.”

Amelia pursed her lips. It was her turn to fall silent. She hung her head low and packed Evelyn’s belongings.

“Grandma, what’s done is done. It’s pointless to try to blame anyone. You’re advanced in years, and it’s exhausting for you to take care of a child who doesn’t know any better. I’ll bring Evelyn to Whitmore Manor to visit you next time.”

It wasn’t difficult to discern what Amelia really meant. ‘Next time’ was probably some time in the uncertain future.

Amelia would never put Evelyn in the hands of anyone in the Zephyr family.

Amelia did trust Dorothy very much. Dorothy doted on Evelyn and cared for her. In the entire Zephyr household, Evelyn knew Dorothy was closest to her.

Yet, Amelia didn’t expect Dorothy to let Christopher take Evelyn out. She should have thought of that. At that time, she was too busy to consider that possibility.

Dorothy was rejected, but there was nothing she could do about it.

“Let Evelyn have a good rest. I’ll have someone send the soup to you.”

“Grandma, there’s no need to go to that trouble. I know what Evelyn likes to eat.”

Dorothy was slightly taken aback by Amelia’s words. Was Amelia trying to cut ties with her?

Dorothy lowered her head. Guilt filled her heart, but she didn’t know what she could do to make things better. She chose not to push the matter, then hung up after a few words of reminders and concern.

put her phone aside after Dorothy hung up on her.

She wasn’t trying to make things difficult for Dorothy, but she really couldn’t put her daughter at risk again.

Dorothy was kind to Amelia and watched her grow up.

However, Dorothy was also kind to everyone else in the Zephyr household.

After sending Evelyn back home, Winona helped take care of Evelyn.

“Evie darling, you’ve suffered in the hospital,” Winona said as she pinched Evelyn’s cheek gently. “What do you

want to eat? I’ll make it for you.”

Evelyn answered Winona with a cheeky grin.

After sending Evelyn back into her room, Winona looked at Amelia, concern in her eyes. “Call me if you need any help. Don’t let yourself get bullied by him again.”

Amelia smiled reassuringly at Winona. “Don’t worry.”

Amelia and Christopher agreed to meet at ten in the morning.

She was already there at nine thirty. She sat in the hall of the clerk’s office, watching the time go by.

Christopher was still not there when the clock struck ten.

Amelia’s eyes dimmed.

She pulled her phone out and dialed his number. However, the call didn’t connect.

It seemed as though Christopher had blacklisted her.

Amelia’s eyes turned cold.

They had signed the papers yesterday. Was he going back on his word?

She stood up and turned to the door, only to see Christopher walking in, dressed in a black shirt.

“I’m sorry for being late.”

Amelia looked calmly at him, not saying a word. It was good that he was finally here.

Christopher stared at the cold, calm look on Amelia’s face. “Have you eaten?”

Amelia didn’t want to respond to his poor attempt at exchanging pleasantries. She simply said, “Let’s get this over and done with.”

Christopher said nothing more.

They headed to the registration counter, where a staff member received them and brought them through the proceedings.
