Chapter 19
The moment Christopher answered the call, he stood and headed for the door.
“Christopher,” Amelia called after him. “Where are you going?”
He paused, glanced at her, but still explained, “It’s Nikki’s birthday party today. If she drinks too much, she’ll have an allergic reaction, so I’m going to pick her up.”
Birthday?
Amelia’s mind went blank for a moment, then clarity hit.
So that was what happened.
On this exact day in her last life, he hadn’t just been busy with Nicole’s competition. He had also been celebrating her birthday. That was his so-called excuse for being unavailable.
She drew a deep breath, trying to push down the exhaustion, and stood. “Ten minutes. I have something to say to you.”
She couldn’t keep dancing around anymore. After the high-intensity competition, she was completely drained. This was the first time since becoming a housewife that she had pushed herself this hard. Her body hadn’t adjusted to the pace.
Christopher glanced at his watch and simply replied, “Wait for me at home.”
Then he walked out, the edge of his coat brushing against the ring on the table. It clinked twice as it hit the floor.
Christopher didn’t seem to notice.
Or maybe he did, but chose to ignore it, not even glancing back.
Amelia stared down at the ring lying on the floor and let out a cold, mocking laugh.
She remembered that it had rained heavily that day. After work at Zephyr Group, she couldn’t get a taxi, so she called Christopher for a ride. He had said he was busy. She had stood in the pouring rain, shivering in the cold wind for a long time, and ended up with a high fever when she got home.
When he got home, Christopher didn’t so much as glance at her, and he didn’t care in the slightest if she was alright.
She had begged him to pick her up, and he had refused. But the moment Nicole called, he dropped everything
and went to her without hesitation.
That was the cold man Amelia had foolishly loved for six long years.
It was ridiculous.
In his world, his choices had always been clear.
Now, so were hers.
Amelia rose with a cold expression and left the clubhouse.

Amelia drove out to her mother’s villa. During the competition, she had left Evelyn in Claire’s care. By the time she arrived, it was already ten o’clock at night.
“It’s already so late. Why are you here?”
Amelia handed her mother a bank card. “It’s the competition prize money. Not much, but it’s a start. The bigger awards will come later. I’ll keep putting money into this card from now on.”
“You’re giving me everything. Do you still have anything left for yourself?” Claire said.
“Don’t worry about me.”
Claire hesitated, torn between concern for her daughter and guilt over feeling so powerless.
Amelia shifted the topic. “Has Evie gone to bed?”
“She was asleep by nine.”
“I’ll go upstairs to check on her.”
The room was dimly lit. Evelyn lay on the bed, clutching a drawing as she slept.
Amelia stepped over and gently took the picture from her, glancing at it.
The theme was “Family”.
Her hand stiffened for a moment.
The drawing clearly showed four figures-Evelyn and Nathan, and Amelia with Christopher. Evelyn was holding her father’s hand, a bright, happy smile painted on her face.
The more Amelia looked, the blurrier her vision became.
Evelyn longed for a father’s love and a complete family. Amelia could understand that.
The little girl had always watched Nathan get close to their father from afar. What could have been running through her mind those times?
In Amelia’s past life, Evelyn had spent her final days longing for her father’s arrival,
Amelia’s chest tightened with pain, a deep ache that felt like knives slicing through her heart. She rose and gently pressed a kiss to her daughter’s cheek.
In her dream, Evelyn murmured, “Daddy, I’ll be good. Please stop disliking me… Daddy…”
