Chapter 20
When Amelia came down the stairs, her expression was far from cheerful.
Claire looked at her with concern. “Did something happen? You look exhausted. I’ll run you a bath. Rest for a while. Tomorrow morning, I’ll take Evie to school.”
Claire’s heart ached seeing Amelia so worn out.
Ever since she was little, Amelia had been full of energy. She was always vibrant, even while managing life in the Zephyr household with two kids.
She looked different now, in ways Claire couldn’t quite put into words.
Amelia shook her head. “I just wanted to check on Evelyn, but I got here just as she fell asleep. I’ve got some things to take care of, so I need to head out.”
“You’re going out so late?” Claire frowned. “It can wait, right? You should get some rest first. Health is the foundation for everything. No matter how busy, you have to take care of yourself.”
Amelia smiled. “I know, Mom. Don’t worry. I’ve got it under control.”
Claire fell silent, knowing there was nothing more to say.
“By the way, Evie has a parent-teacher meeting the day after tomorrow, and both parents are required to attend. “She looked at Evelyn. “You should let Christopher know. After all, she’s his daughter, too. I think Evie actually likes him quite a lot.”
Amelia paused.
Parent-teacher meeting?
Christopher had never shown up before. It had always been Amelia who went.
Amelia didn’t expect that just telling him would make him show up. Even if she did, it would probably be pointless.
But then she thought of Evelyn, murmuring in her sleep, thinking of her father even in dreams.
Amelia pressed her lips together. “I got it.”
Christopher didn’t want his daughter to call him Daddy.
Part of the reason might be that Christopher saw his daughter as a child born from manipulation, someone he hadn’t expected. It was because of this child that he and Amelia were bound together, forcing him to sacrifice his marriage.
A man as proud as he would probably never forget it.
And in Amelia’s last life, she had foolishly believed that time and proximity could make him love her.
Amelia left the villa and drove toward Harbor Villa. Christopher had told her to wait there for him. She wanted to

settle the divorce as quickly as possible so she could focus on her life.
By the time she arrived, it was already past eleven at night.
When she opened the door, the house was pitch dark. It looked like no one was home.
As she made her way upstairs, Nathan’s bedroom door suddenly opened.
“Daddy, why are you home so late?”
Nathan looked half-awake, rubbing his eyes as he stood in the doorway.
Amelia didn’t say a word.
When Nathan opened his eyes and saw her, his face instantly lit up. “Mommy?”
“Where’s your dad?” she asked.
Nathan shook his head. “I don’t know. Maybe he’s with Ms. Nikki.”
Still groggy from sleep, he felt a surge of happiness seeing her back. Without thinking, he dashed into Amelia’s arms. “Mommy, you’re finally home.”
Amelia was caught off guard.
Nathan clung to her, his small arms wrapping tightly around her.
“Tomorrow morning, I want you to make my breakfast. Their oatmeal isn’t as good as yours. And tomorrow night, I want a milk bath. They don’t know how to do it as nicely as you.”
He was treating her completely like a personal chef and caretaker.
Amelia gently pushed him back and looked at him calmly. “Go inside and get some sleep.”
To her, Nathan sometimes felt like an ungrateful little brat. But he was just a child, and she didn’t want to scold
him.
“Mommy, you won’t leave again tomorrow, right?” Nathan asked, a flicker of worry in his eyes.
The kindergarten had assigned a lot of arts and crafts homework. When his mother wasn’t home, he had to do them all by himself. It was exhausting for him.
