Chapter 21

If Amelia came back, Nathan’s life would be so much easier.

“Nathan,” Amelia said, looking at him with a deep breath. “If you need anything, go talk to your new mommy.”

Nathan stared at her, dazed, and didn’t say a word.

Amelia was already back, yet she still said things like that. Deep down, he believed that if his mother could come back now, she definitely wouldn’t leave tomorrow.

He didn’t reply. He just turned and went straight to bed.

Amelia exhaled slowly.

She checked the study and the bedroom, but there was no sign of Christopher.

He probably wasn’t coming home tonight.

And here she was, like an idiot, coming back to talk things over with him.

Christopher had broken almost every promise he had made to her.

Amelia lowered her gaze. At this point, her mind was exhausted, and her body even more so.

She turned to leave, heading downstairs, when the sound of a car engine reached her from the yard.

Christopher was back.

The villa gates opened, and he stepped inside, tossing his car keys casually onto the hall table.

He shrugged off his suit jacket and walked toward the house.

His eyes swept over Amelia slowly, deliberately. “Just got back?”

He radiated that same icy calm, his tone as cold as ever.

“Yeah. Here to talk to you.”

Christopher tossed his jacket onto the sofa and began to head upstairs. “Wait for me a moment. I have an international conference call.”

As he passed Amelia, he paused. “Don’t bother me until I’m out.

Up close, Amelia could clearly smell the trace of a woman’s perfume on him.

It was Nicole’s scent.

His shirt collar and tie were loose, as if someone had tugged at them. Amelia turned her gaze to his collar, where a bright red lipstick mark stood out sharply.

He stood there boldly, completely unashamed, as if he wasn’t worried at all about her noticing.

Even if she did, he would just shrug and say it was nothing, and that he and Nicole were just friends.

A bitter, mocking smile curled in Amelia’s chest as she looked away.

“How long will it take?”

His response was to walk straight upstairs and shut the study door.

She stayed rooted to the spot, staring at the closed door, her hands tightening slightly.

Whether there were people around or not, Christopher never seemed to treat her like a person. He never gave her an ounce of respect.

Just like now.

Even when it came to something as serious as discussing a divorce, he remained utterly indifferent.

She drew in a deep breath, forcing down the storm of anger rising inside her. She refused to argue with him. Once they talked, everything would be settled. After the divorce, she would take back everything that was hers in her past life.

Amelia sank directly onto the living room sofa.

Time crawled by, each second dragging. Her eyelids grew heavy, and her thoughts began to blur. Sleepiness crept over her, clouding her mind step by step.

When Amelia opened her eyes again, she realized she was in the master bedroom of the villa.

Her heart skipped a beat as she jolted upright from the bed.

She remembered waiting for him on the sofa last night, but somewhere along the way, she must have fallen asleep.

Now she was waking up in the master bedroom.

Had Christopher carried her here, or had she walked in on her own?

There was no time to dwell on it. Amelia threw back the covers, swung her legs over the side of the bed, and hurried out the door to look for him.

Anna saw her and stepped forward. “Mrs. Zephyr, Mr. Zephyr left for work. He told me to make sure you stayed home and rest. Any matters can wait until he returns.”

“He’s gone?”

Then what the hell had she been doing here last night?

Amelia took a deep breath and pulled out her phone, dialing Christopher’s number.
