His words immediately put Amelia in a difficult spot.

“Or do you not have enough money to play?” Nicole asked thoughtfully. “She’s just an assistant, after all. I’m sure her pay isn’t that high. Don’t make things difficult for her.”

“Go ahead,” a man’s voice sounded at the door.

Everyone’s attention turned toward him.

Jasper had arrived late after his meeting.

He looked at Amelia and said comfortingly, “Play as much as you want. I’ll cover the cost whether you win or lose.”

One had to go with the flow during appointments like this. What’s more, it was just a card game.

“Yes,” Christopher said as he looked at Amelia with a smile. “What are you scared of? Would we eat you up at the card table?”

“You’ve got guts, Mr. Langley. Is this how you dote on your assistant?” Nicole said with a smirk.

Jasper shook hands with Mr. Johnson and apologized, “Pardon me for coming late.”

Mr. Johnson shook his hand back and said, “Don’t worry about it.”

Jasper looked at Nicole with a smile. “Yes, it’s just a card game, not a fight between a wife and a mistress.”

Nicole’s face froze.

Jasper’s skill at insinuation was world-class. Anyone who caught it knew what he was hinting at.

Jasper strode toward Amelia and asked under his breath, “How did it go?”

“Not too bad,” Amelia replied to him. “We’ll leave after two rounds. The three of them came here together. Wouldn’t playing games with them just be giving them money?”

Jasper was somehow very confident in Amelia. “One versus three. That’s not a problem for you, I’m sure.”

There was a card table in the private room.

The four of them took their seats.

Amelia was the next person to go after Christopher.

“I have a meeting back in the office later. Whether I win or lose, I’ll leave after two rounds,” Amelia said in advance.

Luke said, “Sure.”

Nicole turned to look at Christopher. “Chris, I didn’t bring cash with me today. If I lose…”

Christopher looked at his hand and threw one card out. “You can keep the money you win. I’ll cover your losses.”

He said it casually and languorously.

The two of them were blatantly flirting as they played their game of cards.

Nicole smiled sweetly. Christopher had always been generous to her and doted on her.

Amelia looked at her hand, calm and unperturbed.

Wealthy ladies of high society often played games of cards. She herself had joined in many games with Lucia. She had always covered her own losses.

“Oh dear,” Luke said as he rubbed his hands together. “That’s quite enough from you two. You two see each other every day. Quit acting so lovey-dovey here. Chris, you’ll have to take responsibility for spoiling her and making a princess out of her.”

He threw out another card, which was precisely the card Amelia was waiting for.

Amelia won the first round.

Luke and Nicole were stunned. It was rather obvious what card Amelia was waiting for.

“Chris, what are you doing?” Luke sputtered. “Did you mistake Amelia for Nicole?”

“Did you play the wrong card?” Nicole asked.

Whatever the reason was, Christopher showed his hand and said leisurely, “I concede defeat.”

The money he lost was peanuts to him, anyway.

He turned to look at Amelia.

“I didn’t bring cash with me. How about transferring through the messaging app?’
