The phone rang for a long time before someone finally picked up.

“Mia, what’s up?”

Nicole’s voice came through the receiver.

Amelia wasn’t surprised it was her. “I’m looking for Christopher.”

“Chris isn’t able to take your call right now. If it’s something important, you can tell me and I’ll pass it along,” Nicole said casually. “No need to be formal with me.’

Amelia frowned. “Tell him to call me when he has time.”

“Sure,” Nicole said with a light laugh. “I’ll let him know.”

After hanging up, Amelia felt as if a heavy wool blanket had been thrown over her chest. She couldn’t shake the suffocating weight inside.

In her past life, her heart had been devoted to the family, so she never paid attention to the women hovering around Christopher.

Her absolute trust in him had made her believe he would never cheat, that at worst, he might just be emotionally distant.

But after last night and everything since, she saw the truth.

It wasn’t that a man’s heart couldn’t be warmed. It was that his heart had already been taken by someone else.

She turned to leave.

Nathan came down the stairs, still rubbing sleep from his eyes. “Mommy, is my breakfast ready? If it isn’t, hurry up. I’m about to be late.”

He walked to the table and saw that it was still what Anna had prepared. His face fell immediately.

“I clearly told you last night, so why didn’t you make it for me?”

Nathan looked at Amelia, frowning. He was a little upset. He had told her exactly what he wanted before bed and had been looking forward to it, yet nothing was there in the end.

“Daddy gives you so much money every month, so you can wash my clothes, cook for me, and take care of me. And you just take his money and do nothing? If you act like this, I’ll tell Daddy to stop giving you money. Let’s see where you’ll get it from then.”

Amelia laughed bitterly.

All these years, she had worked so hard for this family, and in her child’s eyes, it was simply her duty.

She scoffed softly and fixed Nathan with a cold look. “I told you, I’m not your mommy anymore.”

Amelia was saying the same thing as always.

Nathan frowned. “You’ve said that a million times, but I don’t believe you. If you really didn’t want me, why would you even come back here? If you don’t want to be my mommy, then hurry up and get a divorce from Daddy!”

His small voice was firm.

Ameli’s smile was bitter and ironic. “You’d better remember what you said today. I never want to hear you call me ‘Mommy’ again.”

With that, she turned and walked away.

At this moment, the only comfort she felt was that she finally understood the truth about them both.

She would no longer hang around them like a fool. She still had a chance to turn back. She didn’t have to wait until she was old and powerless, kicked out of the house with nothing.

Amelia stepped out of the villa and let out a long, deep breath.

Just being in this place for a little while now already felt suffocating, like the air itself was pressing down on her. She couldn’t imagine how she had endured it all these years.

Just then, her phone rang again. It was the kindergarten calling.

“Mrs. Zephyr, did Evelyn tell you about the parent-teacher meeting tomorrow? I just wanted to make sure the little one didn’t forget to let you know.”

“Got it, thank you,” Amelia replied.

The teacher continued, “I also called Evelyn’s father, but he’s not available. This parent-teacher meeting will mainly involve parent-child activities. It would be best if you could convince him to come too. We wouldn’t want Evelyn feeling envious of the other children.”
