Chapter 23
Amelia paused for a moment, then said, “I understand.”
Of course, Christopher wouldn’t have time to attend the parent-teacher conference. She had no reason to ask
him.
On the day of the conference, Amelia had gotten ready early and arrived at the kindergarten ahead of time.
The playground was already filled with parents, all neatly dressed and present.
When Evelyn saw Amelia, she ran over happily and threw her arms around her. “Mommy!”
Amelia affectionately ruffled her daughter’s hair.
Evelyn’s eyes flicked behind Amelia, searching for her father, but he wasn’t there.
Amelia noticed and knelt. “Mommy is here with you by herself. Is that okay?”
“Of course! Just having Mommy here is more than enough,” Evelyn said, turning back with a bright smile.
“I even practiced throwing last night at home. I’m going to win first place in today’s activities,” Evelyn said in her soft, sweet little voice.
“Alright, Mommy will help you get first place,” Amelia promised.
Nathan sat off to the side, watching Evelyn and Amelia being affectionate, his expression darkening.
The teacher noticed Amelia had come alone and frowned. “Did your child’s father not come?”
“He’s busy,” Amelia replied calmly.
The teacher explained the upcoming parent-child activities. “If the father isn’t participating, your child might not be able to join. There may not be enough participants.”
Amelia looked at Evelyn.
She could tell the little girl was excited. Kids all loved activities like these.
If she couldn’t participate, Evelyn might be disappointed.
Amelia stood up. “I’m going to make a quick phone call.”
Evelyn watched her mother go, then obediently sat in her seat, waiting for her to come back.
Her eyes were fixed on the kindergarten entrance.
Suddenly, she spotted Daddy walking in with Nicole. She froze for a moment, then instinctively stood up.
Nathan had already rushed into Nicole’s arms. “Ms. Nikki, Daddy, you’re both here for the parent-teacher meeting?”

“Of course, sweetie,” Nicole said, ruffling Nathan’s hair. “I heard there’s a parent-child activity today. I’ll help you win.”
“Yay! With you here, we’re definitely going to be first!”
Evelyn stepped cautiously in front of Christopher. Compared to Nathan’s boldness, she tugged gently at her father’s sleeve. “Umm, Mommy will come back soon. Only parents can participate in the activities.”
Her little voice was soft and childish, yet she carefully explained the rules.
Nathan snorted. “That’s your mommy, not mine. I already cut ties with her last night! Now neither you nor your mommy has anything to do with Daddy. Stop trying to cling to my daddy and mommy!”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“Are you crying? You’re always crying! Like I’m bullying you or something.” Nathan couldn’t stand seeing her like this. He stepped forward and shoved her hard. “Go to your broke Mommy! Stop embarrassing yourself here!

Evelyn lost her balance from the shove and fell heavily to the ground. Her arms and knees hit the floor, and the pain made her let out a sharp cry.
Nicole frowned. “Nate, hitting your sister is wrong. Help her up and apologize.”
“I didn’t do anything wrong! Why should I apologize? She just can’t stand properly,” Nathan snapped.
Christopher frowned. He looked at Evelyn, sitting on the floor and crying pitifully. She looked so small and helpless, like a child no one wanted.
He bent down to pick her up.
Before he could, a pair of hands scooped Evelyn up first.
When he looked up, he met Amelia’s cold, mocking gaze.
