Chapter 229
Mr. Hale looked back at Nicole, an imperceptible smirk forming on his lips.
“I wish you all success.”
Jasper’s eyes narrowed. He couldn’t believe Christopher was defending Nicole to such an extreme extent.
“Mr. Hale only accepts local students and not those who fawn over foreign powers,” he said with barely-veiled
irony.
Nicole had been bragging about earning double doctoral degrees from overseas the moment she came back
home.
However, the local technology industry was far ahead even in the international realm. Even without personal grudges between them, Mr. Hale wouldn’t give two hoots about her.
Scientific researchers of the previous generations looked down on people like Nicole.
Jasper said, “Mr. Hale, let’s go. I have something to talk to you about.”
Mr. Hale waved goodbye to them.
Christopher nodded back at him. “See you, Mr. Hale.”
Mr. Hale glanced at Christopher and turned around to leave with a scoff.
Nicole pursed her lips, her face dark with displeasure. She had just been accused of fawning over foreign powers for no rhyme or reason!
Christopher glanced at her with a smile on his lips. “Upset already?”
Nicole remained silent.
It was true that she was upset. Her academic qualifications alone were enough to one-up all of Mr. Hale’s
students.
She couldn’t believe that he had repeatedly rejected taking her in as his student. He was a seriously tough nut to
crack.
Christopher chuckled. “Mr. Hale is getting old and is prejudiced against people who studied abroad. It’s understandable, really. Shall I introduce you to someone else next time?”
The tension finally left Nicole, and she sighed.
“Chris, I’m not mad. I just think that he’s way too biased. If Mr. Hale takes me in as his student, I’d bring him advantages and benefits he’d never imagine. How could he have any reason to reject me? What’s more, he clearly has space for another researcher.”
Christopher glanced at her and said, “He’s at the age of retirement and wants a peaceful and stable life.”
Nicole thought that must be the case.
Mr. Hale probably just wanted to enjoy the rest of his life now that he had reached the age of retirement.

That thought made her feel better.
“Whatever it is, I’m sure he didn’t reject me because I’m not outstanding enough. It’s just because he doesn’t have enough energy to take in one more student. That’s why he rejected me. He won’t just reject me, but also anyone who asks him the same, right?”
Christopher flicked the ash off his sleeve and said noncommittally, “Yeah.”
Amelia looked at her notebook as she focused on organizing her notes.
Mr. Hale and Jasper walked over to her.
Seeing how serious and quiet Amelia was, Mr. Hale couldn’t help but feel regretful.
How wonderful things would have been had she been this serious before!
What was the look in her eyes? What kind of a man did she end up marrying? One who had the cheek to boast about another woman in public!
The more he thought about how Christopher had let Amelia down, the more frustrated Mr. Hale felt.
“Mia,” Jasper called out to her. “Have dinner with Mr. Hale and me tonight.”
That was when Amelia’s attention was drawn from her notebook.
She looked up and straight into Mr. Hale’s eyes. She could feel the rebuke in his eyes.
“Professor Hale,” Amelia said as she stood up and greeted him respectfully.
Mr. Hale pointed at her and said through gritted teeth with feigned anger, “You…!”
Coincidentally, Luke chanced upon the scene.
Mr. Hale’s eyes were clearly filled with disgust and disdain.
Luke chuckled. Amelia had no abilities to speak of, aside from looking good on the outside. Of course people would treat her with disdain no matter where she went.
The cheek of her to come to a place like this!
Luke retracted his gaze and said to Nicole and Christopher, “Look at how mad Mr. Hale is. He seems to hate Amelia very much and probably has lots to say about Jasper recruiting her into Nova Nine.”
