“Yeah,” Jasper said as he rubbed his temple. “He left, saying that he had something to attend to.”

Amelia tightened her grip on the cup of tea, looking slightly lost. Her mind was in a mess, and she tried to clear her thoughts.

“How did the negotiation go? Did he share his stance?”

Jasper nodded. “We’re more or less there. I’ll visit him again tomorrow.”

They had a drop too much, and Amelia was feeling rather unwell. Her limbs felt heavy, and so did her head.

Jasper called for a cab and made sure she arrived home safely.

It was only eight-thirty at night when she arrived home.

Evelyn saw the pained look on her mom’s face and could smell the alcohol on Amelia. She swallowed the words at the tip of her tongue and immediately went over to Amelia.

“Mom,” Evelyn called out to Amelia as she stood next to the couch. “I’ll help you run a bath.”

Amelia sat up on the couch with some difficulty and rubbed Evelyn’s head. “Okay.”

Evelyn went to the washroom and ran a warm bath before going to Amelia’s closet to grab some clothes.

She looked at her mom, her heart aching. “Shall I help you with your bath?”

Amelia used to drink at events, and Evelyn had long gotten used to this happening in the past.

Back then, Amelia used to drink on Christopher’s behalf. After they moved out, this seldom happened.

Yet now, it was happening again.

Evelyn was exceptionally sensible despite her young age.

Amelia looked at the clock hanging in the hall.

She said gently, “Darling, leave me be. Go and sleep.”

Evelyn stood where she was, blinking innocently. “Call me if you need anything then, Mom.”

“Okay,” Amelia said with a smile. “Go to bed.”

Evelyn was feeling tired. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and walked back to her room.

Amelia felt a little more awake after her bath and got changed into her sleepwear before leaving the washroom.

She saw Evelyn’s phone and homework on the coffee table in the living room.

Rubbing her temples, she headed to the coffee table to keep those things away.

She switched Evelyn’s phone on and glanced at the screen.

She saw Evelyn’s social media feed.

Nathan had uploaded a post.

[We’re all here at a beach resort for a holiday. Happiness!]

There was a photo of three people seated by the beach in the sunset. They looked just like a happy family.

Christopher had brought the mother-and-son pair to a beach resort.

Amelia smirked as she switched the phone off.

She didn’t feel anything much about it.

Amelia glanced at her daughter’s bedroom door.

However, Evelyn saw it.

Amelia noticed that Evelyn had something on her mind, which she kept to herself when she saw how drunk Amelia was.

She tightened her grip on the phone. She might not care about the photo, but it probably dealt Evelyn a huge blow.

Amelia took a deep breath, feeling as though someone was clenching her heart.

She couldn’t dictate what her daughter felt. All she could do was counsel Evelyn as much as she could.

She put the phone down and opened the door to her daughter’s bedroom.

Evelyn was sound asleep, and Amelia tucked her in well. Even under the dim lighting, Amelia could tell that her pillow was wet.

Amelia’s heart tightened as she looked achingly at her daughter fast asleep. Tear stains could still be seen on her cheeks.

How exactly did Evelyn feel when she saw Nathan’s post?
