Reborn Without You (Amelia and Christopher) novel Chapter 258

Chapter 258

His familiar scent filled Amelia’s nostrils.

In less than a second, she shoved him away and knocked hard into the side of the table.

The pain made her brows furrow, and the loud sound made her instinctively turn to check on Evelyn, who was still sound asleep on the bed.

Evelyn was very deep in sleep and didn’t even stir.

“When did you come in?” Amelia asked.

Christopher took a step back, putting some distance between them.

“Why such a huge reaction?” Christopher looked deeply at her. “I just wanted to come in and help you with the windows.”

There was a hint of probing in his eyes. His eyes looked so intense, it felt as though he was trying to see through her.

“You’re scared of me.” It was a statement. “Or are you scared that I might do something to Evelyn?”

The corner of his lips lifted in a slight smile, but it didn’t really look like he was smiling. It was just a reaction that seemed to have a deeper meaning.

Yes, Amelia was scared.

She was afraid that the past might repeat itself and that tragedy would strike again.

Christopher’s eyes were too incisive, and he was too sharp. He was adept at catching the subtle changes in one’s expressions.

Having been his wife for so many years, she knew how tough it was being his opponent and dealing with him.

Amelia rested her palms on the table and asked with slightly furrowed brows, “How did Evelyn get injured?”

She didn’t want to beat around the bush with him. There was no need for that between them.

“She fell during gym class,” he said flatly. “The teacher called you, but you didn’t pick up, so she called me instead. I brought her to the hospital. She’s fine.”

“Okay.”

“Let her sleep here tonight. She was quite frightened during the day and only just fell asleep.”

Amelia’s brows furrowed.

“Sleep with Evelyn,” Christopher suggested as he lifted a hand and glanced at his watch. “I have something to attend to and need to head out.”

The next morning, Amelia left the house with Evelyn in tow, even before Nathan was up.

Evelyn looked tired and sleepy.

“Mom…” Evelyn looked up at Amelia. “When did you come?”

“Yesterday,” Amelia said as she looked at Evelyn. “How did you fall?”

“I was running during gym class and accidentally fell on the field. I sprained my ankle. Dad came over to take me to the hospital and treated my wounds. My leg doesn’t hurt that much anymore,” Evelyn started explaining.

Amelia could sense her daughter’s excitement at spending time with her dad.

She furrowed her brows and rubbed her temples, feeling an impending headache. Her daughter seemed to be drawing closer to her dad by instinct and by nature.

“Mom, what’s the matter?”

Amelia shook her head. “Nothing.”

After sending Evelyn to her kindergarten, Amelia reported to work at Nova Nine.

She had to keep her eyes on the production process during this period.
