Chapter 26

Chapter 26

Evelyn listened intently, as if she had just discovered a whole new world.

Amelia looked at her. “Did you remember everything?”

Evelyn nodded, her voice soft. “I think I’ve got it memorized!”

When it was time for the competition, Evelyn and Nathan went up on stage together.

Amelia sat in the audience, her eyes fixed on Evelyn. She didn’t know how much of what she had taught Evelyn had actually sunk in, but she wasn’t expecting Evelyn to absorb it all.

If Evelyn could understand the principles, that was already impressive. Amelia didn’t even expect her to execute everything flawlessly on stage. After all, she was still just a four-year-old.

The first round was a rapid-fire question-and-answer session, with points awarded for correct answers.

A teacher called out the questions.

Evelyn was the first to stand and answer in every round, while Nathan only managed to get a few chances.

There were even times when he stood up and couldn’t calculate the answer in his head.

He was frustrated. He shouldn’t have spent the past few days playing so recklessly and neglecting his studies.

Nathan was growing increasingly frustrated with Evelyn constantly snatching the answers.

The first round consisted of 20 questions in total, and Evelyn had answered 16 of them. And she had gotten every single one correct.

She won the first round outright.

She leapt, thrilled.

The arithmetic methods Amelia had taught her were really useful! They were so much faster than doing the calculations the old way.

If Nathan hadn’t insisted on standing up to answer four of the questions, she would have gotten them all.

Nicole frowned from the audience. “Nate’s usually so good at this, but he missed such simple questions. Is he nervous?”

Christopher’s tone was calm. “It’s normal to be nervous. Nate has always been better than Evie.”

The implication was clear-if Nathan hadn’t been nervous today, he would have outperformed Evelyn easily.

Nicole bit her lip. “That’s true. He’s taken so many extra classes. I’ve seen his tests and homework, and he’s always done very well.”

The second round was a written test.

It was a race to see who could finish the paper fastest.

The questions were harder this time, because at this age, many of the children couldn’t even recognize all the

characters.

When the papers were handed out, Evelyn frowned slightly. There were a lot of characters she didn’t know, but fortunately, reading the entire sentence helped her understand the questions.

Because it was a timed competition, they only had ten minutes to complete the test. After ten minutes, whoever finished fastest with the most correct answers would win.

Nathan was on stage, pencil flying across the paper.

This time, Evelyn surely couldn’t beat him. Her grades had never been as good as his. The rapid-fire round earlier had just been a stroke of luck.

The electronic screen switched to show Nathan’s paper.

Almost all of his answers were correct.

Because of the time limit, most of the camera shots focused on the children’s faces rather than their papers.

Ten minutes later, Christine collected all the tests and began grading quickly.

When she reached one particular paper, she paused, stunned.

Then, it was time to announce the results.

“We are ready to announce the highest score in the kindergarten written competition-Nathan, one hundred points!”

Nicole raised an eyebrow and glanced at Amelia. “Mia, you need to keep an eye on your daughter’s studies, too. Look how much Nathan has improved in just these few days with me while you’ve been away.’

Before Amelia could respond, Nicole stood and walked onto the stage. “Then this special prize goes to Nate!”

Christine looked at her sharply. “Excuse me, the scores and results have not been fully announced yet.

Nicole hesitated. “Sorry, I just saw him looking nervous and couldn’t leave him up there alone.”

“You both should step down now, then,” Christine said.

Nicole blinked. “But didn’t Nate get first place?”

“No,” Christine replied. “First place goes to Evelyn.”

“What?” Nicole laughed incredulously. “Are you kidding me? You just said Nate got first place.”

Christine’s tone was firm. “Ma’am, please step aside. Don’t delay the announcement.”
