The teacher lowered her eyes to the score sheets. “I am pleased to announce that the first-place winner of the math competition is Evelyn Zepyhr!”

A look of quiet pride spread across Amelia’s face. Evelyn was so excited she nearly jumped for joy.

“What do you mean?” Nicole frowned at Christine. “Wasn’t Nate the top scorer for this round?”

Christine smiled. “There was a mistake when the papers were first handed out. Nathan’s score is indeed the highest for the kindergarten-level test. However, the paper Evelyn completed was a first-grade math test. She got a perfect score on a first-grade test, so first place rightfully goes to her.”

Nathan’s face darkened.

Impossible!

There was no way Evelyn could solve a first-grade paper.

“She must have cheated!” Nathan pointed at Evelyn, his voice rising. “There’s no way she could have done this on her own!”

Evelyn jumped. “I didn’t cheat! I did it all by myself. Mommy taught me earlier!”

Amelia was a little surprised herself. She had only gone over it once, and Evelyn had already mastered it so well.

Nathan refused to accept it. “I don’t believe it. I know exactly what your level is!”

Evelyn couldn’t have gotten a score like that without cheating.

“First place goes to Nathan Zephyr,” a sudden stern voice boomed from the school gate. “My eldest grandson takes first place!”

Christopher’s mother, Lucia Carter, entered the kindergarten with a cold expression.

The moment Nathan saw his grandmother, he ran straight into her arms. “Grandma, they’re all bullying me!”

Lucia scooped him up, her tone softening. “You are the future heir of the Zephyr family. No one dares to bully you.”

Lucia looked at Amelia sharply.

“I entrusted you to properly raise the children of our family.”

She cast a cold glance at Evelyn and demanded, “And this is what you’ve raised? A little wild girl who pushes her own brother in public?”

She had heard from the butler that Evelyn had shoved Nathan and had rushed straight to the scene. She hadn’t expected Evelyn to even try to snatch Nathan’s first-place title.

“What would you do if something happened to Nathan? How could you be held accountable?”

Knowing that Nathan got pushed made her heart ache.

Lucia turned to Christopher. “How can you let her behave like this? What if she causes real trouble?”

Christopher’s expression didn’t change. He glanced at Amelia coolly. “Apologize to Mom. Evie is very capable, but Nate’s learning skills also need to be reinforced and improved.”

Lucia held Nathan close, speaking slowly and clearly.

“Nate is the eldest grandson of the Zephyr family and the future heir. First place belongs to him, and only him. Even if Evie completed a first-grade test, that doesn’t mean Nate can’t do it. The school’s mistake should not be penalized on the children.”

All these years, Evelyn had always let her brother have his way. Either that, or Lucia pulled strings behind the scenes. No matter what, Nathan always ended up claiming the top spot.

Lucia’s gaze

turned cold again, this time on Evelyn. “Evie, apologize to your brother. Pushing him just now was wrong. The school won’t tolerate a violent child like you.”

Amelia laughed.

“Madam Zephyr, your power really knows no bounds.” She nodded toward the cameras. “If this footage gets out, how do you think the public will see the Zephyr family?”

Lucia glanced at the cameras. “Even if the footage gets out, Evie should apologize. People will only praise me for raising my children well.”

The implication of her words was obvious.

Amelia remained calm, neither angry nor irritated. “True, footage like this can be taken out of context. But what if it’s a live broadcast?”

She raised a hand, pointing to the cameras a short distance away that were broadcasting for a local TV station. Because the math competition was city-sponsored, a local news station had come to cover it live.

The moment Lucia noticed the cameras, she frowned.
