Chapter 29
Evelyn’s voice rang out, firm and clear.
Lucia froze for a moment, then looked at Amelia.

“The daughter you’ve raised certainly has big ambitions! Even if the Zephyr family were handed to her, do you really think she could hold it? Amelia, think carefully. You’re a woman with no money and no power. What kind of future can you give Evie? The child will only suffer. Even if our family waited for you ten years, you could never stand on equal footing with us!”
Evelyn was still young and naive. She didn’t understand class, or that no matter how hard she tried, she could never surpass generations of privilege.
Amelia pursed her lips. “Is this what a top-tier education teaches you? How to look down on people? No matter how poorly I fare, I’ll never beg the Zephyr family for a single penny.”
Christopher’s icy gaze swept over Amelia, and his voice grew colder. “Do you even know what you’re saying?”
The chill radiating from him left no doubt he was angry.
Nicole stepped forward, trying to mediate. “Chris, Mia’s just speaking in the heat of the moment. Once she calms down, she’ll come back naturally. Family sticks together. There’s nothing we can’t get through.”
Her eyes softened as she looked at Amelia. “Mia, if Christopher ever treats you badly, tell me. I will stand up for you. If I have to, I’ll even give him a good wallop to let you blow off steam.”
Amelia looked at Nicole with disgust, a wry smile tugging at her lips. “How are you planning to do that? Going to throw each other on the bed or something?”
Nicole’s brow tightened, her voice sharp. “Mia, I don’t like the way you’re talking. If you have an issue with me, just say it. Why do you have to sully the bond between Chris and me? Even if he stood there in front of me naked, I wouldn’t think anything of it!”
Amelia smirked. “Really, Nathan’s mommy? Your son already calls you that, and you still think you and Christopher are just buddies?”
Lucia froze.
“What?!” She glared at Nathan. “You call Nicole your mommy? What kind of nonsense is that?”
“Madam Zephyr, kids speak without thinking,” Nicole explained. “He just likes me, that’s all. If Mia were really good to her child, would he like me instead?” 1
The Zephyr family didn’t know that Nathan wasn’t Amelia’s biological son. They assumed Amelia had given birth to twins.
“Mia, kids say whatever comes to mind. Don’t take it seriously.”
Nicole smirked and leaned close, her voice dropping to a whisper near Amelia’s ear. “Besides, do you really think Nate shouldn’t call me Mommy? I should be thanking you for raising him for four years, Mia. Why are you so petty and jealous over such a small thing?”

It was a blatant provocation intended to rile Amelia.
After saying that, Nicole glanced at Christopher. “Chris, this is all your fault. You let Nathan call me Mommy. Now look at Mia-she’s misunderstanding everything, and it’s making such a mess!”
Amelia let out a cold, humorless laugh as her eyes drifted toward Nathan.
The Zephyr family has no idea that he wasn’t her biological son, yet they were grooming him as their heir. If they ever found out he had no blood ties to the family, what would their reaction be?
Amelia had no intention of telling them. Lucia was so focused on protecting her eldest grandson, and she wasn’t about to ruin it for no reason. That would be nothing but trouble with no reward.
Christopher glanced at her. “You know exactly how things are. What’s there to be jealous about?”
