Christopher took a slow sip of his tea. “You have a mouth, don’t you? Why don’t you just ask her yourself?”

Amelia was carrying Evelyn, and she happened to hear Christopher’s words. She didn’t let it bother her and pretended she hadn’t.

The Zephyr family treated her like household help, and they could get away with it only because Christopher allowed it.

Just then, Dorothy approached and said, “Mia, sit next to Chris. Evie will sit with me.”

Dorothy was well aware that their relationship was far from perfect. She deliberately tried to nudge them toward each other.

In the past, Amelia would have been thrilled. She would have seized any chance to be close to Christopher without hesitation.

Now, she just felt uncomfortable. Sitting at the same table with him made her skin crawl.

“I’m not hungry,” Amelia said with a polite smile. “Please take care of Evie. I’ll go upstairs and rest.”

With Dorothy nearby, Evelyn would be safe from any mistreatment. Amelia could trust that without a second thought.

Jasper had called a while ago, wanting to talk about her new job.

“You should at least eat a few bites.”

“I’m a little tired,” Amelia replied quietly.

Lucia scolded her. “Grandma is right here, and this is the example you’re setting for Evie? You can’t just skip meals.”

The eldest in the house was present, and yet she simply decided she didn’t want to eat? She didn’t even have the right. Did Amelia think she could do whatever she wanted?

Dorothy intervened with a warm smile. “It’s alright, Mia’s been busy taking care of the kids. Go upstairs and rest.”

Amelia nodded. “Thank you, Grandma. Enjoy your meal.”

After she turned and left, Stephanie rolled her eyes so far back it was almost comical.

Dorothy doted on Amelia far too much, and the younger Zephyr family members resented it. The more Dorothy spoiled Amelia, the more they found reasons to target her.

They were all the same, so why should she get special treatment?

Amelia went upstairs and let out a long, deep breath.

Then, she called Jasper back.

“Got time to talk now?” Jasper’s voice came over the line. “About the parent meeting earlier, sorry. I got pulled into a last-minute project.”

“No problem,” Amelia said. “Are you calling about my joining the team?”

“Mr. Alfred watched your competition. Your skills and abilities are still at their peak, and you’re fully capable of joining my project team to work alongside us.”

Jasper gave her a brief overview of the situation.

After leaving Institute 511, Amelia needed a legitimate reason to return. If she went back directly without a proper explanation, bypassing the usual process, no one would accept it.

However, Jasper’s company was different. He had built it from the ground up, and Amelia had helped him start it back then. Their focus was aerospace satellites.

“You’ll come to Nova Nine as a project engineer. Tomorrow, you can come by and get familiar with the office,” Jasper said.

Nova Nine Technologies, commonly known as Nova Nine, had already made a name for itself in the industry, and most of their projects were tied to national contracts.

It wasn’t exactly like Institute 511, which was directly government-run. But if she performed well at Nova Nine Technologies, returning to Institute 511 would be only a matter of time.

Amelia didn’t delude herself that she could jump back into the field effortlessly. No matter how talented, she would have to take it one careful step at a time.

Her grip on the phone tightened. “Thank you, Jazz.”

Jasper chuckled. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow. Welcome back, Mia.”

“I should be the one thanking you for giving me this chance despite everything,” Amelia replied with a soft smile. “I’ll come on my own.”

Just then, the door opened.

Amelia glanced up. Christopher was carrying a bowl of something as he stepped inside.

“We’ll talk more tomorrow,” she said, then ended the call.

“Looking for a job?” Christopher walked over, glancing at her casually. “Did I agree to you quitting?”
