Chapter 42
Amelia arrived at the kindergarten to pick up Evelyn.
Evelyn came bouncing out, her eyes lighting up when she saw Amelia. She ran straight into her arms. “Mommy! You look so pretty today, like a movie star!”
“Really?” Amelia smiled softly.
Amelia had done her makeup today. She wore a black trench coat with heels, her wavy hair loose around her shoulders. Standing at the kindergarten gate, she drew more than a few glances from the other parents.
In the past, at home, she had never focused on herself. She revolved around Christopher and the kids, carefully picking out his outfits, taking care of the children’s meals and daily needs. Her own life had barely mattered.
Now, she lived for herself.
“When are you coming home?” Nathan stepped forward, tilting his head up to look at Amelia. “I want to eat your cooking. I’ve even lost weight recently.”
He didn’t like the food the nanny made and had lost his appetite.
Evelyn immediately protested. “Mommy’s not your servant.
“I
Amelia ignored Nathan entirely, not even sparing him a glance. To him, she was just someone who cooked for him and tended to his needs.
She lowered her gaze and took Evelyn’s hand. “I’m taking you shopping for new clothes.”
“Huh?!”
Nathan stared at their retreating backs, stunned by Amelia’s coldness. Lately, her mood was unpredictable. She had never acted like this before.
Even if he had a new mommy now, there was no way his old mommy would really ignore him. And besides, Christopher had once said not to worry about her temper. Eventually, she’d come crawling back on her own.
With the season changing and summer on the way, Amelia felt like doing some shopping for herself. As they walked, Evelyn piped up, “Mommy, how about I cook dinner for you tonight?”
“You’re going to cook for me?” Amelia was surprised. “What can you make?”
The hotel Amelia had booked came with a fully equipped kitchen. No matter how busy work got, she always woke up early to make breakfast for Evelyn and cooked dinner at night.
“I can learn,” Evelyn said earnestly. “I don’t want you to work so hard. I’m not like Nate. I eat everything. If you get too busy, I can make my own food. I can also make food for you, Mommy,”
Amelia paused for a moment, gently ruffling Evelyn’s hair. “If I really can’t manage, we’ll just eat out.”
“But that wastes money… we don’t have money right now,” Evelyn said.

“Who told you that?” Amelia stopped walking
Evelyn’s expression didn’t waver. “Nate, He said you don’t have a bright now, and Bradby wa’t you
money anymore. Earning money is hard, so I want to save some. And for summer clothes, one out is esong 1 still have clothes from last year.”
Amelia drew a deep breath, her chest tightening
Her heart ached seeing how thoughtful and well-behaved Evelyn was at such a young age, ways thinking of others. How could she ever let her daughter suffer?
Amelia gently pinched Evelyn’s chubby little cheeks. “I told you already, didn’t I? Don’t listen to Maria vien he talks nonsense. I have money. You can go to the mall and buy whatever you like.”
Evelyn’s eyes lit up. “Yay!”
In her previous life, Amelia rarely had time to take her daughter out like this. Most of her days were spent helping Christopher with his work documents, and when she returned home, she threw herself into the household chores. Because she felt sorry for how busy he was, she even took on more tasks for him. Yet no matter how much she did, her position in his life never changed.
That was why, in her last life, when he was in a rush to take Nathan out with Nicole, he had signed the papers she handed him without even glancing at them. And perhaps even if he had, it wouldn’t have made any
difference at all.
